I replaced my rear tire but I am having problems getting the shaft drive back in. I did it a while ago which seemed too simple, but yesterday I had to give up after struggling for 45 min. Maybe it is dumb question and I should try harder, but any tricks or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Sometimes it is tricky.  what I have done is put the bike in gear, then put the tire on, put the axle through (dont forget the washers!) and then tighten the 12 mm. bolt (that holds the big end of the axle) then thread on the 22 mm bolt loosely.  wiggle the tire back and forth untill while tightening the 22 mm bolt.  It  will usually slip onto the gear after that.  When it slips onto the gear, loosen up the 12 mm bolt, push the axle all of the way through, and tighten all bolts (do not forget the cotter pin!)
A bad marrage is like dirty carbs... It just makes everything else suck.
