Any suggestions on how to get the piston back into the caliper?

Make sure its good and lubed up, and the bleed screw/brake hose is loose or off, then gently press the piston in, making SURE it's ABSOLUTELY straight.
Then, you can move to the vice and make sure that its totally straight and lined up, then slowly push it into the caliper. If it binds, stop, make sure the seals are in, and retry.

I have used a plain old "C" clamp to do it..  Heed what inane has said about being straight.  "If it binds, stop, make sure the seals are in, and retry."  That's the important bit!

good luck.

if you use a C-clamp, don't push directly on the piston, put a brake pad across it, it'll go in straighter.
guess you'll need a bigger C-clamp :)
