Title: End of Year Mileage
Post by: MotorPlow on December 19, 2006, 02:38:02 PM
Okay Fellow Visionaries,
I would like to try something for all of next year. I want to try and figure the amount of mileage we crazy visionaries put on out 25 year old bikes in a year. A total number for all of us. So,....

If ya'll can submit to me (by PM or Email) what the exact mileage is on your odometer (specify miles or kilometers) as the new year changes over (Midnight - 12/31~01/01), I will keep a spreadsheet file with your screen name and mileage. Of course, if your bike is in storage right now and know it won't be ridden until January, you can submit your mileage now. We will do it all over again when we drop into 2008. I will then talley all mileage on our beloved Visions and post a total for the year 2007.

Of course this will only work if ya'll submit your mileage and as new members join our family, I will have to remember to ask them what their exact odometer reading is to add it to the file. What do yous guys think?

Walt,
A locksmith can read your seatlock and replace your complete key. The locksmith I found in Sebastopol, Ca came in a van with a wireless laptop. He got the blank and the notch specs online. Looking at the several no key visions I have It would probably be worth paying for a service call. For a single V it might be worth unbolting the lock and hinges and notching the frame hasp to pull the lock out the side of the hasp. Then you could leave that at the locksmith, saving the service call charge.
Note: The blank is a japanese car one that is used in 4 and 7 notch versions. The V uses just 4 of them on the ignition and the seat lock. I have no idea what the gas cap uses but guess just two notches.

$0.02

i noticed this a long time ago, but it never came up & I filrd it in the minutia that is my mind:
there are two different blanks used on the Visions keys,
one has a single groove on one side, the other has a double groove on each side...

Thanks Coil. I got similar info from my son-in-law who is a locksmith in training. I will probably pull my ignition lock and take it in. Service call is too much and I don't really want to push the bike up the ramp into my truck. I might be tough but I'm not that tough!

Dave -

I was where you are mileage wise about 3 years ago.  I've been getting more miles on average every riding season.  Was planning on getting tons of miles in last year, but after dad started having health problems, I couldn't get many long riding days in.  Needed to stick around close to home in case I was needed.  Now that he's doing so much better, I should be able to really rack up the miles this year.

For those planning on attending & riding the full week of the 25 year celebration can plan on getting over 1,000 miles in 5 days.  I'll have some things planned for a couple of those days & a couple days will be shorter rides.  One day, however is about 400 miles & goes into Wyoming.  Nice mix of fast sweepers, long straights, twisties & incredible scenery - all with little traffic!

So far, a total of odometer readings (with Kms converted to Miles) is:

625,754.8 Miles

Anyone else want to add their odometer reading to be included in the "Total Miles Riden in 2007" tally?

My 82 Vision touched down at 34,000 km.  I have 300 on it so far into 2007 as we had a really nice January here in Ontario.  I burned up my stabilized winter tankful having fun ripping down the road.

Ok, half a year gone, Lets see where we are at:

I started at: 11,951.1
I'm now at 13,386.6

that gives me 1,435.5 to date.

that would average me out to 2,871 for the year (but i won't ride below 50ish, so it'll be less)
or 239.2 per month,
or 59.8 per week
or 8.5 per day (7 day week)
or 11.9 per day on a 5 day work week...

I bought my V on 6/2/07 with 10,755 miles on it.
Now, after starter and stator issues resolved, I'm now at 11,817 on the odo.

I ride, man... I ride regardless of weather.  ;D

Let's see:

1,062 miles in 29 days.  ;D (More is coming - now that all is well and good!) :)
That's:
265.5 miles every week,
or 36.6 miles per day (7 day week)
or 53.1 miles per day (5 day week)

ok, i started december at 6385, have just at 12130 now , and 48 days of that i couldnt ride due to neck surgery/enhancement/parts swap .
i try my best to ride the darn bike out of existance, but the more i ride, the better it is getting!
i have actually ridden a set of tires off, and am close to running the second set to the dump!
2 long rides during spring bike rally to okracoke for pirate runs
3 trips to tail of the dragon
two trips to savanah
six trips to spartanburg
a trip or two to atlanta
ridden almost every work day possible ,even in rain

losses for the year- my trunk- broken into and lid ruined ,but nothing missing
set of led lights - went tits up when r/r failed ,
set of rear bulbs
throttle rocker- came up missing during bike week
two pairs of wayfarers
a pair of elkskin riding gloves
two sets of bike tires- worn out completely(really harsh road surfaces here )
5 oil changes and doing the 6th today
my oem petcock seals
a yics
and one , only one,  stator .

all in all, been a damn good year so far for riding in the beachfront of dixie !

Not sure what my mileage is going to be on vision since I've been riding 3 bikes but I commute 130 miles a day 4 days a week.  I figure that's 260 miles a week if I ride it twice a week.  I'll probably end up with around 6000 miles on it for the year.

I sent a PM to MotorPlow when he requested the info.  My odometer showed 11,848.5 miles at the time.  Today, I have 12,944 miles.  Most of that was from the 25 year rides (about 700 miles).  Add in a 200 mile round trip to see inanecathode and about 200 miles of just playing around in the foothills close to Fort Collins.  I need to ride more but it's just been too damn hot lately!  Afternoon temps in the upper 90s & even to 100 a couple days.  I know - I'm a wimp when it comes to hot weather.  However, I enjoy riding even when the temps get down into the 40s, so Fall riding season can be fairly long for me.

The actual mileage on my V is about 500 miles less than indicated.  I replaced the 82 gauges a few years ago (@ 7300 miles) with an 83 setup.  It was in fantastic condition & showed only 500 more miles than my 82 odometer.

My numbers will be nothing compared to most of you as I only just got one of the bikes running a few weeks ago.  So far I have put about 50 miles on the bike doing test rides and 2 days of riding the bike to work.

She is running great so far.  A few things that I need to do to get her running better, but she is happy to be on the road again.

Do you want total mileage for all 3 bikes or just the vision?  I don't ride the V as much as I do the daytona.

I didn't get the starting odo readings but can give you a pretty accurate estimate if you would like to include it in your tallies.
Red 82 got about 4500 mi's (3,000 to Colorado for the meet).
Black 83 got about 500 mi's (ridden mainly as backup when 82 is down).
This is the most riding I've done in 20 years.

We are up to 13,951 Miles for 2007. I'm gonna ride mine to work to add a few more miles to the odometer.

Of course, I can now use your Ending Odometer reading for your Beginning Odometer readings for 2008!

The program I set up automatically converts from Kilometers to Miles and back again. I just need to know if you are submitting odometer readings in Miles ot Kilometers, Thanx.

VM,
I am going to need your actual Odometer Reading to plug into the program or it wont talley everything properly. Let me know what your end readings are. I will use your mileage and your end odometer readings to set the program with your beginning odometer readings.

Thanx,
Chris

I'm riding much later in the year than i ever have, in part because i have no choice. i have one van & 2 bikes.  my wife's work hours overlap mine, so i have to ride to work.  not that i'm complaining...  ;)

another reason is that if i were still in New England i'd have colder temps & poss snow by now. it's only dipped lower than 40 once so far.

third reason is i happen to have warmer gear than i ever have.  i'm still wearing my mesh GX Air jacket, but with a Sierra Sport raingear jacket over it, the mesh jacket becomes air pocket & keep me warm.  couple that with thermal underware, Carhart insulated (fully fleece lined) jeans, Chaps, Tourmaster boots, breath guard, new Balaclava & Tourmaster winter gloves (after almost losing my pinkies with my old gloves going to work the other day) i stay pretty toast warm.

i looked at heated grips, but it seemed to me that it's the outside (tops) of my hands, exposed to the wind that would need it more than the palms.  also, if i got the kind of grip with the heater built in, & one dies, i have to buy a new set, but the ones that go under the grip would have to heat thru the whole grip befor i felt anything.  gloves seemed a no brainer...

anyway, i'm gettin off topic, i'll let you know when i stop riding...

I see my name isn't on the list - even though I did PM my starting mileage.   ???

Anyway, I did about 100 miles today - down to Longmont to meet kwells @ Boulder Bike Works.  He picked up his shortie handlebars.  While there, I noticed two more sets of low rise 83 bars, on 82 carcasses.  Temp was under 60 for the whole ride - cool, but not unpleasant.

Stopped at Left Hand Brewery for a barley pop & came on home.  Was dark when I got home, but it was a fine ride - even though it is pretty much a straight high speed drone down there & back.

Puts my current total mileage @ a tad under 14,500.  (approaching 3,000 for the year)  Hoping to get a ride in tomorrow - might be the last one of the year as we're supposed to get snow Monday.

Lucky,
The heated grips do heat the palm of your hand, but in combination with winter gloves, the heat permeates throughout the gloves keeping your whole hand warm. I would not be without my heated grips. One of the best upgrades to my bike. The heated grips and heated vest allowed me to ride home from work yesterday morning with an outside temperature of 27 Degrees F. My winter (below 40) gear: Long sleeve Shirt, Heated Vest, Mesh Joe Rocket Jacket, Winter Long Coat, Boots, Socks, Long Johns, Jeans, Helmet, Winter Gloves.

I had heated grips on an atv  and they were ok.  On my bike I have used  Hippo Hands,  for years , for those who done know them, I'm told  they were created by Craig Vetter . They cover the whole end of the handle bar and you put your hands them, gloves and all. The ones I have are  not Vetters, I don't think they still make them.  With my winter gloves  my hands will start to suffer in about 30 min.,  with them  I can ride till my feet can't take any more.  In april '04   I rode from Salem OR. to Port Townsend  WA. about 300 miles in what turned out to be a blinding downpour, the cars were leaving  enourmous bow wakes  and it was about 40 deg  still air temp , at 70 the wind chill was who knows?  I didn't  put on my rain pants  because there such a pita to get on, and suffered accordingly . but my hands were toasty even after 7 hours.

Hippo Hands can be found on eBay.  They were a Vetter product & appear to still be very popular.  I saw a set go for over $100 last year.

I'm fine with my AlpineStar SP-1 armored gloves with thin glove liners until the temps get below about 45 (F).  For colder weather than that, I have a heavy pair of elkhide work gloves & some Smartwool liners.  Those have never failed to keep my hands warm - but I haven't been out in anything below 40 (F) in them yet on the bike.  They keep my hands warm while using the snowblower, though & that was for a couple hours @ 10 - 20 (F).  I retired them from snowblower duty because they tend to get pretty soaked - even with sno-seal or mink oil treatments.

I guess it's-time although I did have the yellow machine fired up out side today. This year I put 17,168 kms (10,668 miles) on the Red & White Vision- out to Denver & back, down to Syracuse NY,out to British Columbia and back &  plus riding to work.
On the Yellow 83 I put 3,556 kms (2,210 miles) on local rides & down to the Vision get together at Tiger's. That runs me up to 12,878 miles this year on two Visions-not to bad for an old fart!  Now here's the deal - get out and Ride these bikes love it !
I also put 3,633 kms (2,257 miles) on the TDM  and only 580 kms (360 miles) on an 81 Xv920rh, its obvious that I must pick up the pace a bit on these two!
I guess 15,495 is the grand total for all the Bikes. On the Red & White I am at 93,623 kms, while the Yellow one has a total of 40,154 kms.
The Xv920 has 53,924 kms and the TDM has 47,813 kms.
      I'm hoping I can do better in 08. ;)
                          Cheers & Happy New Year!

tben, the odo IS accurate , its gear driven. The speedo is driven by a rotating magnet. The 82 speedo  is very inaccurate . Mine  was reading 55 at 65   and  at an indicated 85  it was doing 105.

My year mileage ends @ 55,390   Only riding 1,500 for the year.  I did have my speedo unhooked for maybe 300 miles, before I lubed, and hooked it back up.  Half of that riding was at Colorado.  I still have the AVONS that were new @ the KINGMAN AZ. ride,in Fall 2005!

Regarding of couple of brake-downs I made ~8000 km this year and now its ~59k km on my Vision.
Longest trip were 1800km in two days (well, 36h - its amazing, how comfortable is she).

Partly because of these brake-downs I drive Aprilia RSV 1000 Tuono ´03 since last fall and keep the V as a secondary bike :(  But that also means i have enough time to restore it and give her a fresh look  8)

Hey Rick, actually mine is also hybrid 82/83 Vision :D
Tuono is pure sport bike, so cant compare it with Vision - its very light and extreamly responisve compared to V. Vision´s handling is also great - i`ve made some serious powersliding with it @ 90 kmh on gravel roads couple of times and V is just so predictable and follow corners very precisely. I absolutely love riding Vision  :)
