I did a bunch of web surfing recently on the subject of R/R units.
A number of Visionistas have jumped on the MOSFET bandwagon, apparently with success. But there is another type out there that may be even better, with the high incidence of stator failures on the Vision.
Series regulators have been mentioned a few times here over the years, one member was even trying to design one but as far as I know it did not come to fruition.
Now there is one readily available at reasonable cost, the SH775 series regulator. Successful installs are reported on multiple MC forums. This thread will give you the gist of it, starting on post #13

If I were keeping my Vision, I would be installing one.
That's great news! Too bad it's not being supplied by Yamaha as a cure for stator failures after all these years.

I am on the MOSFET bandwagon as I can get a unit for under 20$. But I will keep this tidbit under my hat for future reference.

any idea where it goes for $75? quickly glancing through that thread, it seems they're in the higher 100's range. (curious because i was about to buy a MOSFET regulator, but will definitely give one of these a chance now
I think it was partzilla. You have to look it up by the Polaris part #, 4012941. I ordered from bike bandit because they also do Triumph parts [for the connectors] and free shipping. BB do not stock those parts so it took about 10 days.

This will make things a bit easier for anyone making the change. You can't make up the wire harness/pig tail as inexpensively as that one is being sold for. I think it is an outstanding deal.

Ok, I think i'm going to take a leap. Will order from partzilla then most likely get the connectors from eastern beaver (since i've been eyeing the fuse box they have there too). Hopefully this makes a nice difference and i can get my bike back up and running
Ok, ordered the Polaris series regulator last night from partzilla. Also the connectors from eastern beaver along with weatherpak connectors for the stator and crank trigger sensors. Hoping to not have to deal with corrosion at that point again.

I purchased the used Honda CBR 600 R/R, code for that is FH008EE. The R/R did cost 50$ for me from the Ebay. I was told that FH008EE is Mosfet and shunt type R/R. I don't know if that is true.
FH008EE is a MOSFET regulator unit, and will run much cooler than the original RR unit.
But because it is a shunt type it is not cure for the stator? So if the stator failure is not caused by the broken R/R unit the stator will fail again after a while.
hmmm, so Shindengen shunt and series regulators use the same "SH" serial number prefix? One might think they'd change the prefix to avoid confusion.
Why did the series regulators suddenly drop in price so dramatically?

The original Vision regulator has four wires, brown, yellow, red and black. Where the brown wire goes? I did check that yellow is not connected anywhere so I ignore that. http://www.xz550.com/wiring_files/WiringDiagram.gif
The new FH008EE has two wires, green and red. I am going to connect the red one through 30A fuse to battery positive. The green wire straigt to battery negative.
The question is, can I leave original brown, red and black without connection to R/R?
Not so easy connection what I expected when purchased the new R/R :-\

FYI, I would not mount the regulator in the factory position behind the battery box.
The brown wire is a voltage sensing wire for your switched circuit.
The mosfet r/rs are mostly self sensing - certainly the FH0012 is, so doesn't need the separate brown
After changing the stator, R/R, cams, fuse box and some wires I now have tested my current setup. With idle speed I measured from the battery 14,3V without lights. When turning the lights on it dropped to 14,25V. I did't test with higher rpms.
I would consider those voltage readings appropriate for idle rpm.
racuda, nice to see those r/r drop in price. You should be able to notice higher heat on the r/r, and lower heat on the stator case.
