Well, let the carnage begin.  The deer kill bike Im fixing has a slow leaking valve cover gasket Its been leaking for sometime and has coated almost everything behind it with a fine oily mist and had completely filled the front sparkplug with grit and gunk.

My head gaskets will be here on Thursday.

I have read about adjusting the vavles and checking the shims. I am going to make a tool or see if I can find one in KC or see if we have an account with K&L and replace the shims if necessary.

Is there anything else I can do or should do while the bike is this far down?

Thanks

Cam shaft cover gaskets are not head gaskets.  Replacing the head gasket requires a whole lot more disassembly than replacing cam shaft cover gaskets.  If your cam shaft cover gaskets are leaking but still intact, a very good cleaning/deoiling and a little Yamabond No. 4 will probably give like new results.  If you do go with new cam cover gaskets still use a little Yamabond on them.  The results will be almost guarenteed not to leak.  Cheers.
