I disconnected the solenoid (god only knows why?) AND now i am not sure which connection goes where. I have 1 wire from the starter and another sort of Y junction, one to the battery and the other to the solenoid.

What does the solenoid do? Does it matter which end i connect what to?

Raj, a solenoid is a relay that handles a heavy current. Your starter button permits a small current to activate the solenoid causing contacts to close which handle the high current going to the starter. The two large wires can go to either solenoid terminal as all the solenoid does is provide a continuity between the two terminals.   BDC
