I found a DIGITAL multi-meter ($18.00 walmart)
SO I tried to test my RR. I put it on DIODE TEST FUNCTION and as soon as I put it on diode test, it flashed a (1.) so when I put the leads on the wires NO CHANGE, and thats on both RRs . the used one I bought, plus the old one.
same reading on both .the number never changed?
both are bad.  I guess . does it sound like the METER is working correctly? is it 'posed to have a "one" on it at the beginning? ?
IT's a VISION.   82. 550. water-cooled and shaft drive.

well no mamm I don't wish i had a car.
well, when it rains I have to find a dry spot.

Did you reverse the test leads? What the test is supposed to read is voltage at the diode junction and polarity( position of the test leads) does matter. I think mine read 5 volts. Don't suppose you still have the instruction sheet that came with the meter?

I tested both RRs and got different numbers from each one. ( finally got a reading AFTER switching  the leads. thanks walt!
I got numbers .500,.500,and .496 off of one(used)  and .502,.504,.506 off my original RR.
what are NOMINAL numbers and what are these numbers tellin' me?
Are they all sposed to be the same?
what numbers does a BRAND NEW one have?
thanks!

with the meter connected as in steps C-1 & C-3 (they're not numbered like that in the chart, but the first & third paragraphs) 1.5V & up is good, 1.49, 1.48 is acceptable.  .50V for C-2 & C-4 +/-.10v is acceptable.
