Title: Calling all gurus
Post by: GT @ oh. on September 19, 2006, 01:57:17 PM
Is there anything I can use in my YICS box to help it hold up longer ?( you know like a coating of por ......or urethane....... or ........something????                 Mine is probably still in good shape as it only has just over 8k (put over 250mi last two days:) thats a lot for me.     thanks for ideas in advance Greg

What is wrong with the YICS? Did it collaps? Is it cracked? Or is it leaking? Or, do you just want to beef it up a bit so you won't have problems with it? Other than having leaks, there is not a whole lot to fix with them. I would go through the YICS test that Lucky has on his site (link below), and fix the leaks if necessary. I can tell you mine looks ugly as hell because of the red RTV Silicone used to seal the internal and external leaks I had, but the chrome cover hides it nicely  ;D

Re: Calling all gurus - can I reply anyway?   ???

do the tests... if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

If you seal the outside, what happens if you then get an internal leak?

I JB welded the inner chambers and fiberglass taped and JB'd the outside. I think I have a minute internal leak and it is going to be a tough nut to crack if I want to fix it.

next time, I may go for a less "permanent" fix and put it on my maintenance list.

I have tried almost everything possible to keep them from leaking, from JB weld to Faststeel, assorted rtv's, gaskets, they all hold for a little while, but alwyas end up leaking eventually.

I wouldn't call myself a guru... I learn by trial and error! In fact I have some fond memories of working on cars with my dad and him  saying "Yeah, you're mechanically inclined.... you screw up everything" :-[

It took me countless times to seal my YICS correctly... that's why it looks like such a hack job... that and the red RTV is easy to cut open ;D

Now that I think about it... there may be so much RTV inside my YICS, they may have different volumes on each side... :-\

Funny you should mention the POR-15.  I had actually thought of doing that to mine to seal the inside.  I know it is fuel proof but not sure about how heat proof.
I too have done mine by trial and error and it seems to be holding fine this time.

I epoxied mine together.  Seems to work fine.

Did mine a few years & over 6,000 miles ago.  Still holding great.  Used a band saw to cut it in half.  Then stuck some sand paper to a small pane of glass to sand all the edges flat.  Cut a gasket like the one shown on Lucky's site - with the cross bars for added strength (if the picture still there).  Used some Aviation Form-a-Gasket to seal it all up.  Checked at the beginning of this summer & no leaks.  If (when) the gasket gives out, it will be very easy to repair.
