I'm finally done with the beast. You name it and I probably replaced or repaired it. Unfortunately my reasons for buying the bike in the first place have changed, and now I'll most likely have to sell it. Oh well, it helped occupy my time for a little while.
repairs:
stator (a preventative measure)
stator cover gasket (old one was pouring out oil)
front brake pads
fork seals/oil
battery
rebuilt starter
new fiberglass gas tank (old "repaired" one leaked a whole lot)
rebuilt carbs
Mods:
new fiberglass tank
equal length header
underbelly ZX10R muffler
scratch built subframe
modified Buell XB9 seat
custom rear fender
aluminum overflow bottle
GSXR tail light
R1 turn signals
fiberglass undertail
after market Harley gas cap
pilot driving lights
after market Harley round headlight
aluminum battery box
aluminum rad shrouds
Delrin frame sliders
cut down rearsets
bobbed front fender
Paint- GM Torch Red
Before. Not so hot.

It's a long story. Needless to say I've got too many bikes and only one ass.
all i can say is DAMN!
I hope someone in the fold buys her...
Very nice! I like it!
BRAVO! Well done. With that much time & effort, I would have a real hard time selling it!

You are one hell of a fabricator. i love a bike thats made from bits and pieces of others!
That's quite a bike, I really like the swingarm and drum blacked out. I've always wanted to make a custom subframe too, that looks really clean.
What a transformation! No problem, too big for you! I'd love your work, I have thought's of the same type of custom, though mine would use a chin faring to hold battery, solenoid , ect. The striped clean area where the catchtank, battery was, looks perfect! Have you run it much? How's it run with that pipe? I also think the black wheels look great! My bike is black, and I blacked my wheels with marking pin! By the way, could you tell me what tires, and sizes those are? That thing looks bitchin
Now THAT is the way to do a naked Vision! It is crying out for lower bars though. Does the rear tire hit the flat panel under the seat? Still a good looking bike though.

Let's see.....what could I sell to finance this purchase. Hmmmm. A certain left-side part of my body? Drat! No market for that!
This bike deserves a feature in Cycle World's next custom roadbike feature. It's that good.
Suffice to say I plan on stealing a few ideas for my own XZ project.

Yeah, It's amazing what painting the wheels/ suspension does to the look of the bike. The exhaust sounds pretty good. Kind of like the old exhaust, and it's not even loud. I haven't had it on the road. I never bothered to register it, and now I probably won't. The tires were one thing I didn't replace, because their new. The front tire is a IRC durotour RS-31of 90-90-18, the rear is a Bridgestone battleax 110-90.
If I were keeping it I would go with lower bars, maybe 83 risers, put on some bar end mirrors, and flush mount the tail light. Like any project though, If I don't call it done, it never will be. I really don't thing the rear tire will hit the undertail. I'm pretty sure it has more clearance now than it did with the stock fender.
Cycle world, I wish. If they weren't interested in my last bike they probably won't be in this one.
Try Road BIke. www.roadbikemag.com

I almost forgot. I bought this darkroom window blackout stuff. It's just a big vinyl sticker. I thought I'd use it to break up some of the acres of red. It's a lot cheaper than doing it in paint, and it's easily reversible. I kinda doubt It would handle high speeds, but that shouldn't be a problem.

is that a modified stock fuel tank of a total fiberglass/plastic one. We could all use something that won't rust. WOW...
Fiberglass. See http://ridersofvision.net/forum/zindex.php?topic=8027.0

OK Tiger,
This bike would look great in your fold -a few Tiger stripes &...
Kenny in Grand Forks ND on the Red'n'White Vision, all is well even found a lot of sunshine. I left on Saturday morning from Trenton and my 1st o/n was in Marquette Michigan.
Gotta go and get the monkeybutt powder on the right spots.
Cheers Ken S.
I really like the additional black, it really stands out and adds some nice contrast to the tank. How much will you be asking for it?
I'm not really sure what it's worth. Visions seem to range a fare bit. Custom work doesn't typically add value. I was thinking of starting out at $2000 and going from there.
Chimera, your "Other Bike" is insane.....absolutely incredible work! ;D
David
Its worth that price at least, i'll tell ya that much :D
I got offered $1600 the other day for Cafe' Vision (probably not going to take it, i'm having too much fun on it) if i had the money, i'd ask at least $2500 -$3k for yours. have you looked at Craigslist lately? some of the crap they're getting (asking anyway) a grand for...
Tasty. At first glance, I thought it was a buell. I like the look.
SWEET! :o
If I had your gas tank and you had a feather up you butt, we would both be tickled pink. I hope one of our visionaries takes you up on the offer to use the moulds. I'd hate to See them get lost, to us!
Haha, yes my other bike is insane. Although my next project will make it look very tame.
I still have some carb work to do. I balanced them with my Air flow meter (not easy), but the idle won't stay steady.
I think $2000 for A bike nobody's ever heard of, is the best I can ask. The tank molds will probably just go with the bike. I may end up selling it after I move to Seattle.
How about if several Visionaries get together and make an offer on the moulds?
If the Visionaries interested in the mould, would make a donation to this site would that help in keeping it here? Say $10 each member? ::)
I'd go for that! Would that mean that we all could use it and pass it on? Given the time, I'd be willing to lay up a few of them.
Keep in mind that I only have the top molds. I screwed up the bottom one when I removed it. I failed to remove the undercoat before I layed the glass down. That's not really a problem as the bottom side is the less important one, and doesn't have to look pretty. If you do a careful job trimming the tank halves, they should fit together tight enough to be bonded together. That would preclude the need to glass them together. Which would mean less finish time.
Necro-Bump this thread demands attention.
There's probably still a huge demand for that exhaust system, and the gas tank. Anyone know what happened to chimera, or the bike?
sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet
mega-necro bump.
any existing information on this exhaust? whatever happened to chimera and this bike?
did you try sending him a PM? If he still has the same e-mail address, he would get a notice.
That really gives me some ideas for my IOM bike. I love the tank and seat. Also the tires. I was thinking of making some "cheeks" to add to the stock tank. Just bump them out of steel sheet and weld them on.
It's really a nice piece of work and I'm envious. Wonder would he be interested in a trade for my bike?

Ive been told that our tanks are too thin to weld. (I don't weld)

A vision tank would be a challenge to weld . You need to get a very experienced welder to pass judgment on the project.
They can be welded as I had the one on the racebike done. The original tank had the gas cap beat off of it and the guy cut a good one out of another tank and welded it into the original tank. I think the only issue would be welding low on the tank and getting into rust.
Jeff
Did they TIG weld the race bike tank? Here's a thread from a metal forming site where a guy butted 2 razor blades together and TIG welded them.
http://www.allmetalshaping.com/showthread.php?t=390 (http://www.allmetalshaping.com/showthread.php?t=390)
I am pretty sure it was either mig or tig, but I don't know. I would like to have been there and watched. He did the paint job on it too and I did get some bubbling up over some of the weld.
Jeff
You would have to have a damn good mig welder and someone with a lot of experience to get a good weld on a v tank that will last. I formed some very thin flat iron and brazed it to my old tank to fix the 1000 pinholes on the lower part or the tank. Turned out nice
I agree Adam, I'd guess TIG.
I looked up metal spraying, pretty interesting stuff, I tried to contact a local company just to see if they would do a bike tank & how much, but the number was no good

If I'm not mistaken, chimera's tank is all fiberglass. He made a mold of the original tank then modified it to create the one he has on the bike now. He had a whole thread with lots of pictures.

I used to be a pretty fair welder and I think I could probably do it. If I can't I've got a friend who's an aircraft mechanic that can weld Reynolds Wrap.
I would be willing to donate a few bucks toward a tank and a master mold, if anyone thought we could find a place to do a run for the ROV.
wow that is one sexy beast.
