Title: Dropped bars?? Hmmmm
Post by: Lucky on May 11, 2008, 12:22:15 PM
I was thinking that since i want the tourer to be more comfy & the Cafe to be sportier, i'd switch the lower 83 risers on tourer with the tall 82's on Cafe, plus the pegs, etc.  Yes, i know the 82 risers hit the fairing, but only while slowly moving the bike. (might not be able to lock the steering) but in normal riding it'd make no difference at all...

so then, as i was swapping them over i had a thought: what if i swapped the sides & flipped them over on Cafe too?
i'd have to relocate/replace the turn signals & figure out cable routing, but it's doable.  no it's not going to be really comfortable, but that's not what the bike is for...

the real handicapp is that it would really reeealy limit turn around.  one pic below shows the bar up against the tank. (a couple of those kevlar stick-ons for bumpers)

here are pics, What think ye??

This could be rather cool if it also is possible to ride with.

The bars are leaning a little bit backwards. What happens if you move them around, and let them lean forward instead?

BTW: Are the US 83 bars the same bars as the euro 82 bars?

;D  Did that when i took the bike to the drag strip a few years ago. certainly made it near impossible to turn around.

one thing i thought of before but never tried:  switch the risers the that they would angle forward, and then mount the handlebars in a normal position.  would give you a few more inches of clearance, but im not sure how much lower or how much more forward you would have to position yourself.  just a thought.

i think they might hit the lights, but they can come off...i'll go try it now...

I see the ruination of a nice gas tank in your future.

It would allow you to rest your chin on the steering head bolt :)

thanks Q, but i'm not worried about the tank so much, after lots of body filler & repeated sandings, careful filling of rust holes & a by the book POR job, it still weeps at the corners.  >:( plus the paint will be gone at the first boilover... (if i drill the holes i might stave that off a while..)

anyway, i traded risers just to see & it's sure low.... really really low.... but it clears everything but the lights. may or may not be too low, i am getting older...  :o we'll see, but i'm leaning towards just using the shorties as intended. thsre isn't any rush, so i can play with it.

Really interesting incorrect assumtion:

Contrary to popular belief, you CAN use 82 risers with a full fairing. i installed the taller ones from Cafe today, & there is only slight interference. from the master cylinder. the bars will even lock at full turn.
my bike has some slight differences from stock:
-the windshield is a few inches taller than stock (from Humber in Poland)
-the master cylinder is 83 not 82, & if i remember right, it's bigger than an 82 anyway.
-position of the bars does obviously make a difference.

since this bike is now my official touring version of 'sport tourer' i like the upright position of the upright bars & 82 peg placement, something QBS recently mentioned as bass-ackwards (my words not his) in a recent post when refering to the 83 with fairing having a sportier setup than the naked bike. I wholeheartedly agree!

Macroars, the North American '82's came with the taller risers , in '83  they came with the lower European risers.

is it too late to say I liked it the way it was??  ::)

    uh huh uh huh  ;)

i put the taller bars on Tourer last night & rode it to work today.

first with the 83 full fairing: NO CLEARANCE PROBLEMS

it might only be that i'm used to the 83 ergos, but i'm not sure i like the taller risers anymore. i'm defenatly more upright, but my back hurt a little (but that could have been from work), my CG was defenatlly higher, & i feel like i took ALL the "sport" out of it.

i might change them back...

I nticed a big difference in how my bike handled after I switched to the 83 risers.  I agree, I feel that the CG has a lot to do with it...and my back hurt less.

Just my 2 cents, having had the 82 bars, I thought they sucked.  My back hurt because they are just too upright.  The 83 bars are perfect with regards to comfort.

I disliked the '82 risers too, there adjustable alright, too high and angle too low an angle and this ain't no good either!  I liked the '83's but my back and shoulders didn't (probably the result of too many birthdays). I think the whole riser concept is ugly and goofy.
My solution was to create the custom triple clamp and use bars that are a little higher than the '83's and farther back .

a few more minuets playing with the bike tonight:

--83 risers swapped sides & upside down. bars mounted back & up a bit. (locating pins will need to go if i decide to try this out)
--I can get a full turn to lock on the right, & 1/4" away from full turn to the left (may need to shave a spare choke lever to clear)
--cables will need some serious thought to rerouting and/or shortening (Oh Rick...)

Everything is squeeeeezed in the fairing. no place to mount turn signals unless:
a) i mount them or replacements right to the fairing
b) lose the fairing & somehow mount them to the headlight bucket
c) figure something else out...

anyway, they are lower than clip-ons, but with the vbars turned back, they may be ok. not cross country, but that will come with ride testing, which still won't be for a long while, i have no $$ for tires for this thing & still have to figure out titleing. nothing i've done is undoable so that's how i'll go for now...

Lucky,,, give up on flipping the risers, controling the bike will be next to impossible just due to getting used to them ,and learning to ride all over again . best solution: shave a set of risers flush, get a set of super bike clip ons ,,, they make them in right size, not expensive ,, and they will "fit" the look of the bike,,, all cafe and no "crashe' "  lol

don't forget, once all is in order, get a tail cowling made at your favorite body shop-- little bit of fiberglass fabrication, a small amount of padding and a bit of paint    mounting is easy if just bolt it to the seat pan

am going tail cowling route on my black vision soon,,, just have to get it low enough to ride ,then begin adding in the extras
