We'll see.  I've been so swamped I haven't had a chance to look at the Vision yet after the spring run.  But the local airshow is on Memorial Day (yes, I'm involved in that, photography), my parents will be out of town soon, and the school year will be over.

Of course the Canadian Vision riders haven't made the Spring run yet!!!
We have to wait for the ice and snow to disappear from the roads and for the polar bears and wolves to migrate north for the summer!
Damn, you don't know excitement until one of those critters leaps out from behind a snowbank and you try to stop on the ice!  ;)

Hey Glenn, thanks for posting a date.
I am finally able to access the forum again. First time since April.
Dates are fine.
What I would like to know is would you guys like to stay at the local camp/ resort or the Holiday Inn Express in Jackson.
The Pine Acres Resort has a row of about eight rooms with kitchenettes, lineoleum floors etc. but is right here at Pine Grove. It's clean but definitely not modern.
The Holiday Inn Express is typical new Motel with buffet breakfast located in Jackson, about 10 miles from Pine Grove.
Any one who wanted could also camp at  the Pine Acres Resort or they also have trailer sites, showers, hook ups, etc.
I'll post some more info later.

Guy's. I don't know if I can make the ride. Beemer got hit last Friday and it looks like it maybe totaled. I'm ok with a little whiplash and bruises.
Yes I'm off uncle Sam's clock, but I'm in the process of moving. Me and the better half will be leaving SOCAL for a place in Nevada. Should be closer for our rides ???

Title: Re: CROV GANG'S FALL RUN...Sept. 23rd and 24th...
Post by: supervision on June 07, 2006, 08:01:27 AM
Oh ya, the vintage trailer rally was SOLD OUT,  At first we thought we would just head down there and see if we could be around anyway but then we decided, let's go to Zion and Brice. I had been telling Barb about all the cool rock formations we had seen on the Kingman trip,  so that's what we did instead.  We had our 1956 Shasta travel trailer apart fixing some dry-rot and with all the rain of last winter it was taking forever to get finished!  Finally the weather broke and it was bttw, untill it was finally finished. The first night out we made it to a truck stop in Bakersfield... breakfast a Denny's and pulling towards Vegas by 6:30 am.  That afternoon we made it to St. George Ut., turned off  of 15 onto 9 that takes you to Zion. The road went through nice little country ranches, it was spring conditions and every thing was looking happy! We got to the entrance for Zion and slowly crused through. The rocks are spectacular, a bunch! I have never said wow! so many times. We pulled of numerious times and took pictures of everything (the camera failed to keep any of the pictures, we have nothing).  We kept going cause we need to stay at Ruby's Inn at Brice and we need to get there and get a site for the trailer. All was well on our arrival and we enjoyed a needed rest.  Hiking into Brice canyon was a mind blower again, and we relaxed in the Hot Tub afterwards. The next day we left the trailer and took 12 to an area called Escalante, the road was bitichen!  that day turned out to be 300 miles or so and we hit the Tub again. The following  day we took a drive to Lake Powell, on to the north rim of the Grand Canyon. Sorry, I got to go for now, see everybody at the next ride. Dave and Barb

Supervision -

I took my folks through Zion & Bryce on the way back from my law school graduation.  Zion is big & fairly spectacular, but I thought Bryce was incredible.  Those hoo-doos are quite a sight to behold.  Living near all these 14,000 foot peaks, it takes some really amazing scenery to get me going, but Bryce & a lot of Utah for that matter is indescribable.  You just have to go there to believe it.  Glad you had a chance to visit those places.  The rock formations and colors are unlike anyplace else.  Anybody been through Monument Valley before?

Yup. Absolutely breath-taking vistas.

My suggestion: spend a week in Flagstaff, AZ, and take day trips to many different sights. You can do the Grand Canyon, Monument Valley, Lake Powell/Page, Petrified Forest, Sunset Crater, Oak Creek Canyon/Sedona, Wupatki, Tuzigoot, Marble Canyon, the Meteor Crater, and lots of other stuff that I don't recall at the moment.

Then, travel north through Page, and spend a few days in Cedar City, UT exploring the area. From there, head to Moab for another couple of days. You'll have experienced some of the best scenery the southwest has to offer.

Of course, it would be best to do this all on a motorcycle... :)

Along with Greg's suggestions, check out the Durango, Colorado area.  Not that far and you can ride over Red Mountain Pass.  These are some of the most rugged mountains in the Rockies.  As a plus, you can take a ride on the Durango - Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad.  The entire four corners region out to Flagstaff is motorcycle heaven but doing it in a cage is still pretty spectacular.

Yes touring these areas, has been on my list for awhile. I tryed to talk Barb into letting the vision ride in the back of the truck but she wasn't digging it.  We have been sort of toying with the idea of taking the trailer to Lake Tahoe the week of the fall rally and then comming back to Craig's place in time for the fun and festivites.  I forgot to mention, when we got back from Utah, we took off the next day and rode the V to the cabin... Barb on the back...  Our kids were having a party on Friday night and weren't invited!   That's the first time she rode on the back in years.   We had a nice time crusing easy.   I either need a new ass or a new seat or combination of both,   see ya

Just had to bring this post back to the top.
Went riding this weekend with two ZRX1200's and a GS1100e. How 49 to Sonora for breakfast where we ran into Tim Pashnit the founder of the California Roads website. Nice guy, full of energy.
Went over Sonora pass. What a spectacular road. It's amazing how good the pavement is with all of the abuse it gets from winter snow and ice at close to 10,000 ft at the top.
North on 395 to Monitor Pass to Markleville. Monitor is simply a 7 mile swithchback upgrade followed by about 3-4 miles accross the top and a 7 mile switchback downgrade to the Carson River. Markleville is biker hangout deluxe.
We gassed and left as our pipes weren't loud enough to hang with that crowd.
Came back over Carson Pass, Hwy 88, by Kirkwood Meadows Ski resort, Caples Lake and Silver Lake. Very beautiful but full of Fathers Day day trippers.
280 mile loop
Rode the ZRex for a while. What a torque monster. And those twin six piston calipers work very well, thank you.

Hey ,pretty cool ya ran into Pashnit, guess it was nice to be in the high country, staying cool.  Barb and I drove down to Fresno caus uncle John was putting on the Father's Day fly-n. It was hot as Brides breath down there, felt good to relieve ourselfs in the pool afterwards.  Almost went riding Sun. but diced to mow the 3 week growth off the lawn instead.  Did you see the Honda VFR 750 in Motorcyclist?  It's a Shobert Race bike.   Moto GP was a mess, they need shields protecting the brake levers on those suckers... How bout that Miller track in Salt Lake!!  Totalitly Tit's

Hi All,
I'm definitely interested in attending the CROV fall run. My V is running great and I hope to replace my steering head bearings before the run. A question for the group, are other bikes welcome on this ride ?  My brother just bought a Honda Nighthawk 650 and I'd like to invite him also. Please let me know.

Kudos to the ringleaders for organizing these get-togethers.  I was very disappointed to miss the last fall run but the pictures and write-ups provided some solace. I'm looking forward to September.
Best wishes ,   Vic

Bikes apart, and I don't know that I'll make it by Sept, but we'll see.  Taking a look at what needs doing, it's a fairly small list, the real problem will be figuring out what has gone wrong with the bike. I'm leaning toward electrical because the fuel filter is really clean.  I haven't  taken a look into the carb bowls.  Maybe this weekend.  I hate having to work... :-)

Had two days to ride after the 4th to check out the local roads.
Clinton to Hwy 49 to Moke Hill. Hwy 26 to West Point to Red Corral Rd. and back one day.
Pine Grove/Volcano Rd. to Rams Horn Grade, Shake Ridge Rd, Fiddletown Rd. and Ostrom Rd returning by Hale Rd. and Charleston Grade through Volcano the next.
All Looks good.
I think we'll have to do a morning loop using lower elevation roads suck as Stony Creek,Ione/Sutter Creek rds, Shake ridge etc.Break for lunch and continue up over the hwy 88 pass return by hwy 4 (Ebetts pass) to Angels Camp and back on hwy 49.
So many routes to choose from.
See you in September.

There not on there yet, but they willl be.  I had a crazy couple of weeks.  Spent all of last week living in a dorm room at UCLA, while I completed some Collective Bargaining training.  This week I'm spending all my time getting my classroom in order for the new year.  Once things settle down next weekend, hopefully I will be able to get the brake situation worked out.

Today, I awoke early, mowed the lawn, 7 am, then I decided to call  the Vision Miester to see if he wanted to meet up for  a ride.  By 10:45 we had met at the Chevron in Valley Springs, Ca. (0ne hour from my house, 1/2 hour from Miester's pad)  Our route was east on 26, cross the famous 49, and on up 26 to West Point then to 88, back down acouple of miles to his house.  Once there I was treated to refreshments and some lunch.  The Vision Miester lives in the middle of riding  that is about as good as it gets. I enjoyed my visit, then we rode back to the meeting place, and returned to our respective houses. A good fall rally comming soon for sure, be there !  Dave

You have to call it what it was... a sighting lap.
track conditions are good.
Shoulder grading is dirting up the pavement in some areas, but that will clean up quickly.
Anyone arriving early on Friday, say early afternoon (2:00) can expect a guided tour of the lower elevation roads.
Saturday I think we should run the passes of Hwy 4 (Ebett's Pass), Hwy 88 (Carson Pass) and maybe Hwy 89 (Monitor Pass) if time allows.
We'll have a welcome barbeque Friday evening and a group restaurant meal Saturday.
We can do another quick lap of local roads Sunday morning, if anyone is up for more miles before departing.

People,

          We have a Kitchenette reserved.
Jim E's vision is up here in the Medford storage, it's my best shot at riding a
Vision before we get the house in Guerneville sold and Amy's making pizzas up here. I'll
just have to clean the pilot jets on it. The Flying Pig is at his house in Ridgecrest waiting for me to ride the V down.

The Oven is arriving as i write with its crew from Holland working seven  tens to get it together. 170 tradespeople
on site trying to finish for Oct 13 testing and Sept 15 production.

The house in Ville blessed us with some dry rot so we have the opportunity to leave it better than it was when we got it!
Lori's staying with the cats until it's finished, I'm driving too much. A ride in the Sierras is definitely called for!

See Ya, riding something... :-\

Have you rode 66 yet from Ashland to Klamath falls?
A Vision kind'a road if there ever was one...
I sure miss Ashland...

Glenn,

I have not "ridden" any of these roads yet, but there are a lot of great roads I've "driven".
The test run for Jim E's bike is my soonest prospect. I'll try 99 to Grants Pass then Jacksonville for a shakedown.

       Insh'allah, I'll ride 'em soon.

Greg Branche... how is it looking?

We've made reservations for the whole family. We'll be bringing the tent trailer (no, not behind the GTS!) and using that for our accommodations.

I'll be on the GTS, and Matt & Ryan will be on their Visions, assuming Ryan succeeds in getting the front end re-assembled. The girls will be in the Envoy pulling the trailer.

Glen,
I put the master cylinder on yesterday and guess what.  It didn't work!  Now if I didn't know you, I would have to assume you were trying to pull a fast one over on me, but I'm willing to give you the benefit of the doubt.  I pulled the plunger out ( not sure of the technical term) and it had I bunch of crap in it.  I guess its time for the routine 25 year service.  I look forward to seeing everyone and actually riding a Vision to a Vision rally.  What if I just stick the Vision emblems onto my Kat in the appropriate places?

Ryan and I finished getting his '82 back together enough for me to take it for a test ride around the block last night. There are still a couple of minor issues to resolve (throttle cable routing, rear brake light switch connection to the brake pedal), but those should be cleared up today.

Now I just have to remind him to stay away from the soda bottles out on the road, and he should be good to go for the rally.

Craig,
Superfly and I will be trailerling up on Friday.
With any luck we should be there about 1 or 2pm.
Would you be kind enough to post directions from HWY 99 coming from the south and directions for those coming from the bay area?
Thanks,
GlennW

The most direct route is to take Hwy 99 north to Stockton to the Waterloo/ Hwy 88 exit.
Careful here as the exit does not have much approach and is a tight right, left, right.
Follw Hwy 88 to Jackson, careful to catch the left turn just past Clements.
As you approach Jackson the first stoplight is ridge road. Take a left here and you will bypass the traffic of downtown Jackson.
Follow Ridge Road to Pine Grove, careful to catch the left turn about 6-7 miles out.
Ridge Rd re-intersects with Hwy 88 at Pine Grove.
Take a left and follow Hwy 88 through Pine grove until you see the large Billboard on the right for the Gold Mining Camp. This is the corner with Tabeaud Road, where you will find the Pine Acres "Resort" about a half mile off of the Hwy.

For any one coming from the North the best bet would probably be to take Hwy 99 south from Sacramento to the 104/Ione exit. This is about 8-10 miles south of Elk grove.
Follow 104 past the nuclear plant, through downtown Ione (turn left ,two blocks, turn right) to the Hwy 88 junction.
Turn left towards Jackson and take the same Ridge Road route described above.

Good luck.
Looking forward to a great meet.

Check those stators, synch those carbs.
Is your master cylinder serviced.

I've made a reservation for 20  for Saturday nite at the Union Hotel at Volcano.
This is a small gold rush hotel that usually doesn't  see 10 customers a nite.
They have a nice outdoor patio with recorded music, a bar and pool table. They are planning a 50's theme for that nite which includes "comfort food" (home cooking, meatloaf, mashed potatoes etc.).
They will also prepare individual orders off the menu but would like me to:
1) verify a head count and
2) give them an idea of what people want (grilled steaks, chicken, burgers etc.
They want to keep it simple as they don't have a big staff.
Please post your preferences and I will tally it up.

Since I'll be stag, let me know if anyone wants to share the room (and cost) with me. It's Room #10, a kitchenette...$64 total for the night of the 23rd.

Sorry I won't be at this ride. Just got done removing 1400 miles worth of dead bugs off the Beemer, had to go to the Reno area to look at houses.
Both of my Visions run, but I won't be able to ride them much. The grand kids are due in the next 2-3 weeks and I get to stay close to home so Ang can go to New Mexico.
Hope the ride goes well and all of you keep the shiney side up and thre rubber side down. Have fun, and let me know when the next ride is, I'll try to make it.

well I'm able to get back on. Hacker screen was on my system. Deleted all internet history files etc. and restarted.

Hotel suggests Prime Rib for the group at $20.00 per person for full dinner. I will confirm on Tuesdy evening so let me know if you have a problem with this. Standard menu items will be available also (including burgers).

We'll have a short 2-3 hour ride for early arrivals on Friday. Leave about 2:00+-.
Welcome Barbeque & brew at Visionmeister's Friday evening. I'll leave instructions with the desk at the motel.
Saturday I'd like to get off by 10:00 AM. There is a breakfast restaurant, Sierra House, about 1/2 mile from the Pine Acres Resort. We can regroup at Pine Acres for the departure.
Any one expecting to arrive later should leave a message with the Pine Acres Resort attention Glen Walker and we'll contact you to try to coordinate a rendevous point. We are planning to ride over Highway 4 with stops in Murphy's, Lake Alpine and Markleville before returning over Highway 88 to Pine Grove and Dinner at  Union Hotel in Volcano.

We'll do a small loop on Sunday for anyone interested and with time before departure.

Its going to be some great riding.

Hey Guys.

Was out in the garage ALL weekend trying to get the V ready, unfortunately the Vision Gods frowned upon me.  I had an engine that lost oil pressure on the freeway, and dropped the 2nd cylinder, and I had to have it towed home,  I looked into it this weekend, and could not get that 2nd cylinder to fire enough to keep running.  I have one more engine that I am gonna try, but I will know more tonight.

70% chance I am taking the Ninja
30% chance I am gonna have the Vision ready
100% chance I am going!  ;D

It sure is nice to have a mom who will entertain your family so you can ride with your old man.  I guess that would be more like chase your old man, because the only time I ride with him is when he decides to take it easy.

That single disc won't ever stop like the brakes on your Katana Chris!
Thats why I went the 83's... but a braded line really helps either one.
I can most likley get a Galfer to bring up ... if you let me know tomorrow.
The last single one I bought was about $60.00
Glad your all coming....

Yea but I can ride down the street with the front brake lever pulled to the grip.  Not my idea of a front brake.  It's too bad becasue the bike runs great!

Chris, I know what ya mean on that lack of front brake.  Before I improved mine I would avoid too tight of a road cause it would be all I could do to make the turn.  I never had a steel hose on just one brake, but it's the next best thing.  see you soon  Dave

We are going to meet Steve from Lake County and ride down from Napa Valley with him Friday noonish so we will arrive in the evening.

I've got got the carbs off of Jim E's bike here in the Medford Storage of Jackson County ROV. I'm praying that I find the plugged pilot jets that McCoy diagnosed last spring. Life has been frantic between the new plant in Or. and repairs to the house in G'ville. Lori got the permits signed off on Monday so we can get it listed to sell, a home purchase up here probably fell apart last week, testing of our new oven and pizza press is going well, I'mm putting the carbs back on tonight...

Need a ride with the CROV, good chance of makin g it.

I wouldn't mind joining up with a riding partner(s) coming from the Bay Area, if anyone is planning on going Friday around 12pm.

BTW, I hope you guys realize I'm not a racer...I'm a very slow touring rider so I'll probably be bringing up the rear during the rides.  ;D

Seriously.... get your ship together... looks like CROV has a legitimate chance at the NA ROV world record and it would be unfortunate to attend riding a COW  >:(

Help! the venturi's were loose in these 83 carbs, that had to be the part throttle dieing.

So, my best guess/observation is that the slot in the bottom side should go above the part throttle/idle.. openings above the throttle plate. When I position it this way a groove is available at the top of the venturi that would hold the venturi slightly above the body idle openings.

But it could rotate the slot to several other positions in the same groove.???

707-975-5248 is my cell if you know where the venturi slot really belongs.

For those of you coming up Saturday Morning... make sure you don't miss the first ride... for some reason that Saturday AM Ride always seems to be a really good one!

Why is the clock going ...   t  i  c  k       t  o  c  k...   t  i  c k     t  o  c  k....?

'Cause "I wanna ride".... That how I'm feeling at work this week

Congratulations on the brakes, Visionless :o :o :o :o :o ;)

The carbs on this 83 have been modified on the adjustable vacuum/ball/tapered spring loaded adjusting screw circuit that the 82's don't have.

Putting them on this afternoon, if they are doubtful I'll go with the set from the "15 years and I'm back/rod knocking 83."

It's going to be a great ride

Brenda's uncle works for Ace Hydralic here in town, so I had him build me a really cool braided line.  Made a 100% improvement.  Dad says they now feel like original 82 brakes, so can imagine how bad they were before.

Pine Grove and Prime Rib, yeah!

Got up this morning at 3:30, went down to the storage to finish the carb change. I went for a switch because I'm not sure what the modifications to the original carbs would do during elevatgion changes.

I got the V ready to start prior to putting the tank on. Looking at the stacked boxes in the back 20 feet of the room I realized that I have no idea where the keys might be. The movers packed everything.

Calling a local locksmith out as soon as they open is my next move. We just put a new long block in the Olds so we'll have a reliable trailer along ;D

See Ya'll Soon

I've been calling Lockssmith since I hit Sonoma County at 7:00 am. I slept at a rest stop just North of a grass fire that jumped 505 while I slept and was heading away to the east as I came upon it. Big winds heading east today.

I'm waiting for the local Sebastopol Mobile Locksmith to meet me at 9:15 here at Starbucks. Lori is getting ready in G'ville for a 10:30 to 11:00 pit stop and load up. Steve and us are meeting at the Gas station where Calistoga Road meets 29 at 12:00PM.

I at least need to be able to open the gas cap, I hope someone brings a schematic cause mine are all packed, Insh'Allah Mobile Locksmith Eric will make me a key, let us all breifly quiet our minds and think him a good thought. ::)

Riding or towing....we'll see Y'all this afternoon.

CROV Gang,

I just wanted to thank you all for a wonderful time during the CROV Fall Run. The riding was fantastic,  the bikes inspiring and best of all , the warm friendship extended to us. I'm going to start planning to attend the 25th year ROV run in Colorado for June 2007. Chet is determined to get a Vision now so if you hear of a likely cnadidate, please let me knoiw.
We had a great time and look forward to seeing and hearing from our new friends.
Best wishes,  Vic

Thanks to all for attending. I had a great time showing you the roads around the county. There are many more to explore.
It was nice to meet all the new CROV riders. The comraderie of the riders and diversity of bikes adds to the event.
We were really lucky that the one mishap wasn't more serious. It was my worst nightmare that someone would get hurt on the ride I was leading. We are all vunerable to the slight mistake that moves us form in control to out of control so keep your focus.
Hope you all made it home safely and are rested and ready to roll again.

Hey, those aren't parts bikes.  That's two guys working very hard for the last minute thrash award.  Superfly looked like he had it bagged working on his bike at the resort( he came without oil in the bike to let the gasket sealer cure), then Coil showed up with his bike disassembled on the trailer to look like he would take the award,
but Superfly fought back with overheating and timing problems and finally bearing problems to claim the title.
Thanks to our hosts Craig and Janelle for providing such a beautiful and welcoming event for us to get together with old friends and meet new ones,  Great, great roads and scenery. Also great attractions for those who didn't ride. First sign at a municipal park to welcome the CROV ( I hope someone got a picture ).     Thanks to everyone who helped with the rider and Vision after I tried a little off road "testing" with Visionless's bike.  I still enjoyed the ride the rest of the way. I rode my motorcycle to work today so I'm doing well. The best part though is the friendship and camaraderie with our fellow Visionaries.  ;D ;D ;D

Yeah, what a great/crazy weekend.

Glenn showed up at my house at 6:30, and we started the trip up, picking up Visionaries along the way.  We arrived around 3:00, got settled in.  We wanted to go out really quick, so I added oil and fluids to my bike, and a bunch of us went off for the early bird ride.  That was a great ride, great roads, and a truck riding down the street with his brakes on fire.  On the ride, my bike was running hot, and I realized that I had the accidently twingled the engine.  We went back to the lodge, and then all went over to Craigs house to have some of the best food I have had in a long time.

I went over to craigs house first thing in the morning to use his garage to fix the timing on my bike and check out the carbs before the ride.  I ride back and the bike is riding much better, almost back to normal, but not quite right yet.  We line up for the picture (my bike is on the end because I was tinkering on the bike untill the last second) and then we are off for the ride.  Shortly into the ride I loose most of the power, oil light starts flickering and I realize that I am not going riding anymore.  VinceDee pulls over to make sure everything ok, I tell him I am going back , turn the bike around, (and luckly we just went over a hill), bump start the bike, and limp back to the lodge.  I am in the parking lot, I hear the dreaded metal on metal engine clunk.  At least she got me back to the lodge!  Coil comes back in a few minutes to see if I made it back, and he had a stuck float.  So, it is 11:00am Sat. morning, 380 miles from home and the engine spun a berring... time for a beer.

Here is a picture before the ride on Sunday morning.  Craig let me ride his 83, and we had a great ride.  All in all a great weekend.

Getting home was fun!  Thanks to Sal for the ride to Bakersfield, and GlennW for trailering my bike back.

Hi all, I thought I'd finally post a ride report for the CROV Fall Run. It took me a while to put this together, hope it's entertaining enough. There's a map of our Saturday loop and some pictures. It was a helluva good time, and multiple thanks to Craig and Janelle for hosting it.

Map of the big Saturday ride (click for larger version):

Friday:

Arrived at about 3pm. There was a map waiting for us at the front desk that showed where Craig's house is and what Saturday's ride will be. Meet and greet until about 4pm. I finally got to meet some of the people behind the online nicknames (although now I have to figure out who belongs to which nicknames!). Coyle trailered down his Vision all the way from Oregon, though it still needed some work to be road worthy. He was hoping to have it ready for the Saturday ride.

Getting to know some of the crew:

Several riders went out for a afternoon loop in the general Volcano area. Encountered a couple of deer, some of us saw a flaming pickup truck (ask Glen, Ron, or Pete about that), and Pete's Vision started having a few problems.

Gassing up for a Friday afternoon ride:

BBQ at Craig's house. Excellent food and beverages, fine company, and lots of stories, jokes, and lively discussion (Ferret Flogging, anyone?). A few more folks arrived during the party.

The stories some of these guys tell. The food was DAMN good:

Saturday:

Pete was up early to take his Vision over to Craig's, tear it down, and build it back up in just an hour or so before the ride. Amazing how well some Visionaries know their bikes that they could do that. Apparently, Coyle found the time to get his bike going also.

Getting ready for the big Saturday ride:

Breakfast at the Sierra House for most of us, then we met up at the Pine Acres Resort for the big Saturday ride. 12 Visions and 4 other bikes showed for this ride! Pete was back with his Vision, but still had the tank and seat off mere seconds before everyone else was about to leave. Somehow he made it, though, and the group roared it's way to the intersection at highway 88.

I discovered that this picture was blurry, but it proves we had 12 Visions!:

This is a better picture, but it was right before Pete lined his "V" up as the 12th one:

Yes, that's Pete still screwing around with his bike literally seconds before we all left for the ride:

Shortly after turning right on 88, Pete's "V" finally gave up the ghost as it spun a crankshaft bearing. I stayed with him for a few minutes (in case he needed help) as everyone else went on ahead. He was able to get it bump started, however, and rode back to Craig's house with his hobbled bike.

I didn't see this, but apparently Coyle missed the turn off onto highway 26 (it's easy enough to miss) so wasn't able to continue the ride. Bummer that he came all the way from Oregon and wasn't able to go on the whole ride. Don't you wish we had some better way of keeping track of riders so everyone knows where the main group is?

I have a laptop GPS system on my bike, but even with that technological advantage it was tough to catch up to the main group (they were really hauling!). I later found out that several riders had missed the left turn onto Calaveritas Road, near San Andreas. At least that partially explains why I was having so much trouble catching up to them.

We went into Angels Camp and turned left onto highway 4. A few miles later we were in Murphy's, our first rest stop. Some of us gassed up, while others (Glen, for example) were busy buying out the motorcycle shop across the street. After 10-15 minutes or so, we drove up the road a couple of miles to eat lunch at the Giant Burgers restaurant.

Stopped in Murphy's for a rest and for some to gas up:

Then drove a couple of miles up the road for lunch:

After lunch, we hit the road for the 60 miles that remained until Markleeville (our next pit stop). This portion of the ride was my favorite because there is some seriously beautiful scenery along this part of highway 4, as well as some real tight twisties. I was trying to catch up to the forward group and came flying over a hill when I saw a CHP officer standing on the side of the road and a CHP SUV behind some trees....oops! I let off the gas and hoped they weren't interested in ticketing anyone at the moment. They didn't make a move, so I guess I lucked out on that one.

One more rest stop before Markleeville (or so we thought):

Just after crossing Ebbetts Pass (at the 8050 ft altitude) I came around a right hand corner and suddenly saw a huge dust cloud on the right side of the road, then the sight that every motorcycle rider dreads....a motorcycle laying on it's side on the edge of the road! I recognized the bike right away...it was Ron's. Apparently, Ron took his eyes off the road to adjust his mirror, just as a left hand curve was coming up. His bike drifted onto the right hand gravel shoulder, and that was all she wrote. The Vision drove down a small embankment, hit a rock, then the uphill side of the embankment, and flipped him off the bike. Everyone immediately stopped and began to render aid. Unfortunatley, Ron had been thrown about 15-20 feet off the bike. Fortunately, he hadn't broken or torn anything. He took a few minutes to recover his senses, but all he suffered were bumps and bruises (big ones, but still...). His helmet did it's job perfectly and the zipper was ripped open on his jacket, but those are small prices to pay to be able to walk away from an accident. The Vision was in surprisingly good condition, considering what it had just been through. This particular bike had been modified with standard round motorcycle handlebars, and to no one's surprise, they were now bent. The right mirror was broken off, the right side of the tank was dented, and the muffler was pushed in a bit. After about 20 minutes of fussing with the bike, it fired right up and was ready to ride (albeit with still-bent bars). The amazing thing is, Ron was actually able to ride the bike back at the same speed as everyone else, so this incident ended about as well as it possibly could (it was kind of hilarious to watch Ron drive the bike, though. His having to hold bent bars made him look like Quasimodo, when seen from behind). On a serious note, two things came out of this incident, for me: one, always pay attention. Even one second of looking away and it could all be over; two, always wear protective gear. We ain't like cagers, so when something happens it's almost always going to end up bad. Thank God Ron came out of this with minimal injuries, but it sure reminded me of why we, as motorcyclists, always have to be paranoid.

The Vision proved itself to be a tough bike here, after some restraightening, it fired right up and was ready to go:

I think Ron was just trying to set a new distance record, just to impress us:

As "tough guy" Ron dusts himself off, others start getting his bike ready for the road again:

We fueled up in Markleeville and left in two major groups to head back to Pine Grove. About halfway back the rear group caught up to the forward group so we could come into town with the full contingent. On the way back we encountered a hardheaded Harley rider who didn't seem to understand that his 1000cc motorcycle was being outmatched by a bunch of 550 Yamahas. No worries, we just blasted on by and finished the trip back to Pine Grove.

After getting back to Pine Acres we settled down and traded war stories and drank some beers while waiting for everyone to gather for the trip to the Union Hotel, and some much needed dinner. Ron appeared to be a little listless but was in pretty good shape, considering. He kept complaining about a sore rear end, but I noticed that no one was in a big hurry to offer their medical services to examine his ass ;D.

Some of the group telling war stories and gathering to go to dinner:

Ron is enjoying all the attention, but still insists that his butt needs to be examined:

The group finally made their way to the Union Hotel restaurant in Volcano (including Craig and his "lesbian life partner"...they made such a cute couple in their little girly Volkswagen Cabrio, don't you think? Janelle thought they looked hilarious). Some of us bellied up to the bar and drank Moose Drool beer (yes, really) while waiting for the folks at the restaurant to lay out a nice buffet of prime rib, potatoes, veggies, rolls, and cookies. We took over their patio and ate, then made our way back to Pine Acres and broke into smaller groups. It was at this point that I needed to leave, so I'll have to leave whatever happened on the Sunday ride up to someone else to tell.

Aren't they adorable, in their VW Cabrio?:

All in all, it was a super weekend. Tons of thanks to our hosts for setting up this event and hosting it (and putting up with us all). This was my first Riders of Vision run, and I was made to feel welcome by everyone. It's a great, fun, friendly group, and I look forward to future events.

Wow -

Ron's butt must not have been too bad as I see him sitting on a tailgate after the 'incident'.  Glad it wasn't any worse.

Nice to see some familiar faces in the crowd!  Thanks for the write-up, map & photos, Vince.

Hey Vince
Wonderful write-up.
You are officially nominated for CROV scribe.
The map was great. Anyone who blows it up should realize why we don't suffer from "Dragon Envy". By my estimate it is a 225 mile loop.
Sunday we rode Clinton Road to Jackson. Paloma Road to Hwy 26 and Mokulomne Hill for a break, where we met with some interesting riders and bikes including an ex-Vision owner who had recently sold it.
Continued on to West Point via Hwy 26 which is full of wonderful sets of sweepers and good pavement.
Returned to Pine Acres via Pioneer and Hwy 88.
No problems today other than a blown fuse on my red 82 which was quickly diagnosed and replaced.
It's now Wednesday and I am just feeling fully recovered.
Thanks again to all who attended.

First off, Ron wrecked the Vision, but it belongs to me.  His didn't make the trip.  Second,  I'm glad you have the Dragon,  I've seen the video,  but I have roads withing 30 minutes that blow the Dragon away.  And guess what?  They're not parking lots. How about a 5000 ft elavation change in less then twelve miles (Sherman Pass) or For those who have been on it, the Lion's Trail, a road you can have high speed coasting racing down.  And guess what I can do both however fast I want and on a bad day see two or three cars.  So you can have the Dragon and I'll keep our numerous roads (too many to name or count).
      Chris

All in good fun!!!!

Thanks for an excellent report Vince.  I have a few corrections and additions I would like to make.  As Visionless stated, it was his Vision I was riding.  I can't take credit for the dent in the tank as it was already there.  Nice tough bike as it handled very well in its modified condition.  Riding with assymetrical bars and ass is a good exercise in bike control, especially with a non functioning rear brake
( it would work, but the adjustment had changed enough that my ankle wouldn't travel far enough to activate it and every time we stopped I forgot to adjust it, something about the assymetrical ass pain made me forget until we were moving again ).  I would like to add that it was a right hand curve and I was all the way through it and on that long straight before I made the mistake of countersteering the bike off the road with the mirror. Actually the bent bars made the bike interesting to ride and I enjoyed the rest of the ride except for the axle hitting the bent muffler on larger bumps and sending a jolt right up through my assymetrical.......you know.
Oh, and I think when you're on a bike it should be Quasimoto.

Thanks to everyone for your concern.  My injuries consist of a sprained left hand and a highly bruised left gluteous maximus. By Monday morning I was able to use the clutch on my ST 1300 and ride to work.  The hand is almost fully healed and the gluteous is feeling much better too.  The afternoon before the ride my Vision wouldn't downshift approaching a stop sign.  Chris and I took it home and removed the clutch cover and the clutch.  I suspected a broken spring on the shifting pawl, but it was OK.  The shift drum refuses to turn so a complete teardown is in order (43,000 miles).
I have another low mileage engine so I will swap that one in while
rebuilding the original.  The physical injuries pale in relation to being without my trusty Vision. 22 years and the only breakdowns have been two stator replacements.

You did an excellant job of wraping round that bike to protect the tank..  Then after getting the bike back  where it was rideable, you tell Chris, your turn.  You busted your ass, but you sence of humor was ok...

Just a follow up on my "chirping V"... from the CROV ride...
I finally got inside under the tank and found the line from the bottom from the air filter to the front cylinder was off. I also found a nasty section of the seam (about 1/4" long) on the YCIS chamber....
New hose and clamps and two neat rubber vac. hose caps solved the problem. It also had a cold start problem that is now gone.... hummm... YCIS is now in the drawer. I think it runs the same.
Question... Should I re-sync the carbs after this...???
GlennW
PS..  I love the way I can get to everything in there now!

Brian,

That bike is squeaky clean and ready to ride.  I'm feeling much better and over almost all of the soreness.  Now I just need to get my own bike working again.  I'm going to be on a journey similiar to your own except that I have another running engine to make it easier to be riding my Vision again. ;D ;D ;D
