Title: Euro gear ?
Post by: QBS on November 14, 2004, 06:55:39 PM
Would a UK V have the same reduction gear ratio as Vs' found on the Continent?  Cheers.

Euro gears (crank drive & clutch basket) are lower geared than ours, by one tooth i believe.  contact Humber, he can usually find these.

I thought Euro V's were higher geared than ours...

Lucky is speaking numericaly , the euro. models turn 500 rpm less that ours, at any given speed.

I was looking at a UK clutch basket and primary on ebay (probably the same one you were QBS).  It has the 73 teeth clutch basket and 33 teeth primary which is the same as our Visions  ??? .  It would seem that the UK got the same clutch as USA and Canada.  This could be a helpful tidbit for all to keep in mind.

Have a good one all,

Louie

C Louie: You're right. I was considering that item on e-bay, but decided that you would probably do more with it than I would.  Thank you for confirming that it is the same as our North American Vs'.  Cheers.

Eurogears are 72/34. Both of mine have them. They change the overall gearing about 5%. So 9500rpm is 113mph rather than the previous 10000rpm I used to see. They are NOT lowering the revs 500rpm all the time Rick.

I am not sure I am following your thinking Jason, would the rpms not be approx. 500 rpm in any gear, any time, as compared to our original gearing at the same mph or kph. I understand the 5% overal change but that change would certainly be reflected throughout the rpm range at any particular mph.

No, gears work as a multiplier, so at 10000, the new gears lower by 500 RPM, at 5000, the gears would lower by 250 RPM, etc...  A way of looking at it logically is to take the limits, 0 and 10,000.  If it lowered the RPM 500 always, then you would be running at -500 RPM when the engine was stopped :-)

Actually that would be -500 rpm with the engine off!

The multiplier idea works for me, except the last time I checked anything times zero is zero.   ;)

I guess the new math never took ...way back... for some folks...just kidding.

I should rephrase that , the Euro gears lower  the rpm a maximum of 500 rpm, depending on the speed.
