Carburetors / modified boosters for better response and driveability
« Last post by jefferson on February 02, 2023, 09:44:13 PM »
I just got done watching a David Vizard video on modifying a 2 barrel carb for more flow, They're trying to mod a stock Mopar 318 to make 1 hp per cubic inch without buying parts and throwing at it. This is going to be as stock as stock can be.
He talks about mods to the boosters that will improve flow, but the main benefit that he talks about relative to us would be the stronger signal by putting a sharp edge at the top and bottom of the booster. Looking at the booster on an 83 carb there is a noticeable flat edge from the od to the beginning of the inside of the booster. I do have some experience with this as I did this to the booster on a 16 horse Briggs v=twin on a riding mower. It caused it to run too rich to the point it was unusable without rejetting. I got a high altitude jet for it which was the only leaner jet available and have it installed now. The batteries a goner so haven't tried it to see how it does now.
This just might help our issue with carburetion transitions. This would come with a caveat as jetting would most likely be needed. I have always thought that there wasn't a good enough signal to the boosters which caused the bogging.
Look his video up on youtube and see what you think. David Vizard is a well renowned engine builder, tuner, and author. Very well respected in his trade.

After being a long anti-FB citizen, I finally had to succumb to joining as I thought I was missing out as this forum did seem less and less to have current posts.  After having joined FB, ONLY for the Vision site, I was sorely disappointed.  I felt I had to be on FB as I was starting a carb rebuild and ultimately discovered that I needed a part, and lo and behold, the ROV forum came through!

I also explored all the many posts on Vision carbs and the solutions that many have used and shared on the site.  I hope that the site can stay viable as I'll be following up on the carbs with rebuilding the forks and other maintenance, including valve clearance inspection and adjustment, if needed.  (Does anyone have a tool I can rent or borrow, in the event I have to make adjustments - they appear to be "unobtainium" so far!)

Thanks all for your help in supporting this bike and all its innovation...

Used original tanks often have rust issues at this age.  The European Ebay often has new old stock tanks.  Getting a bit pricey these days.  There is a discussion from a while back (3 or 4 years?) of making a tank from fiberglas, from making the form, and a mold, and finally the tank.

'82 and '83 tanks differ in that the '83 has a 'port' for the fuel gauge  that the '82 does not have, so not exactly interchangeable if you are trying to keep things specifically original.

Thanks Ron, we appreciate you keeping the site up for sure

If you decide the end has come, I hope you pass it on rather than just delete it.  Visions will be valuable one day, and this site will be needed

2022 saw another record low number of posts on RoV - just 32
Not all that long ago we were getting that a week.

It's sad to see this decline - Facebook is a decidedly crappy alternative but seems to get all the traffic

 :(
yeah, unfortunately, not the best.

I do appreciate you guys stopping in from time to time
as they say, time marches on, and at some point in time this site will also.
I plan on keeping it going as long as there is some interest.

thanks

I'm hoping someone is close to you and can pick these up and make good use of them. An 83 is an awful good bike so someone needs to get this and get it on the road.

I have an 82 full fairing last run maybe 10 years ago; and an 83 I was working on restoring. I have the full fairing for this one as well. Also have an 82 "parts" bike and lots of assorted parts including covers, wheels, forks, tanks, etc.... I am moving and don't have time or energy to try and get the 82 running again and to finish the restoration of the 83. I will gladly give the bikes and all parts to anyone who is willing to come to Sylmar, CA to pick them up  but must take all bikes and all parts. I am leaving the state by January 29, so if no one comes to get them, I will give them to a motorcycle junk yard. Call if interested. Free. (818) 298-3416
