Now we just have to figure out which of these stators is the best and the cheapest or best value.

fret not

You take that list and go "shopping" on eBay until you find one at a price you like and buy it.  Make sure you read the discussion about the MOS/FET regulator/rectifier replacement.

Happy Spring everybody!

Just remember fellows that not all these stators have the right grommets so don't throw out your original Vision grommets and some require slight alterations to the wires coming off the stator so once again don't trash your old stator until you pull the pieces off to convert the alternate type.  If you are comfortable with making the alterations they are the same basic stator winding and may save you a few bucks on your replacement.

Most all the other models are very reliable and much longer lasting due to different engine design which does not "cook" the stator like the Vision does. Our nice hefty solid steel flywheel with virtually no oil cooling does a real fine job of barbecuing our stators with mostly radiant, plus internal engine heat.  That is why they usually fry on the top too as that is the hottest zone.  If you have a choice, anything but a used Vision stator is probably a better deal.

Cheers...

:) The used 535 Virago unit that I got from N_V a few years ago was a drop in unit, as was the one I installed into one of my rebuilds from a Honda Ascot, although the three wires on the Honda unit were Yellow not White...but that doesn't matter.

The sealing grommets are a PITA to change over, if your using a 'different' stator...but they must be changed over to retain a perfect, leak free seal.

One thing you can encounter is were the wires exit the stator...they can be in a slightly different position from 'stock'...but again, this should not be a major problem...

Okay, I have a question.

I have seen additives for you coolant that help reduce your running temp. Being that the vision is water cooled, would using something like this help prolong the life of the stator or is a all just hogwash?

It probably couldnt hurt, but I dont think it would be as effective as the oil cooler mod.

I was unaware of an oil cooler mod. Is there a thread somewhere on how to do this? If so could some one point me in the right direction? I'm all about some modifications to improve the longevity of my Vision.  ;D

OK got a piece of the puzzle,, use quotation marks to make sure the words are together.. oil cooler brings up oil.. and cooler.. in any context,, "oil cooler" brought up, oil cooler, stuff. So, search  "oil cooler" .. wealth of info.

Kenny

  Rube,
Welcome to the site. A suggestion for you as far as a good place to start and cheaper & less labour intensive is to use a good quality motor oil - synthetic if possible. I am at 106,000 klms and I am using the same Stator.
I have also removed the connectors & soldered the the stator wires, also a good idea is installing a Voltmeter so you can monitor your system. On the 82 I had back in the eighties I cooked three different stators -each one expireing around 25,000 klms. & always at the most inopertune time.
I know from these failures that if I cook one while on the road & see it coming (far away from home) that I can carry on by disconnecting the headlight & carrying on.
Cheers Ken S. (some where in Spain) :D

Kenny,

Thanks man, I have all three of those on my checklist before she hits the road actually. I just hope the stator I have now is still good. I talked to the guy I purchased it from about any charging issues and he said he never had a problem. The bike has about 17000 miles (a little over 27000km) so she is definitely in the danger zone for a faulty stator. Tigers list will help me greatly if it is bad. I am within about 30miles of 2 different bone yards if I need to pilfer one from a more common bike. I'm spending from now until next spring reviving the bike. I don't want to half ass it, because when it comes time to ride I wanna spend my time riding and not working on it every other day.  ;D
