I got my por-15 kit in the other day and I will be sealing the tank tomorrow.  I drained the old gas out of the tank last night and am letting it "air out" today.  Now I got the heavy duty cycle kit b/c I don't know if anything was ever used on the inside of the tank.  I was reading the directions and it says to spray the cleaner onto the surface.  Did you guys just pour maybe a 1/4 or 1/3 of the bottle in and swish it around and then let it sit or what?

I haven't used the heavy duty kit, but pouring some in sounds like common sense, I've heard the longer you let it work, the better. if you have enough to do it twice that might be a good idea..

QBS

Ken, does the heavy duty kit cleaner say anything about containing Phosphoric Acid?

wolfman

My "regular" kit came with:

1 1Qt Bottle of "Marine Clean"
1 1Qt Bottle of "Metal Prep"
1 1/2 PT Can of Por15
A 2 in square swath of fiberglass mesh
A mixing stick
Cheapo plastic gloves

And excellant directions which must be followed to the letter for teh stuff to work properly.  Which it does!

Includes everything Wolf said minus the gloves and directions, and the additional 1 QT Por-Strip.
I have read the lables and see nothing about phosphoric acid.

I will attempt to duplicate the directions from memory...

1. Empty tank of all fuel and rince out with clean water, remove any fuel petcocks, filters fittings etc..seal up holes where they were with duct tape.
2.  Divide the "marine clean" into three equal portions.  Use 1 portion to 1 gallon of WARM (not hot) water.  Add mixture to to tank and shake vigrously and "roll" the tank around to ensure the cleaner gets to all inside surfaces. Pour out and repeat this process with the other two portions mixed the same way with warm water,  followed by a clean water rince.  By the time you rince with the plain water, it should come out basically clean.
3.  Pour the entire bottle of metal prep into the tank. (CAUTION IT IS CAUSTIC WEAR GLOVES AND EYE PROTECTION!!!) Roll the tank around to ensure it gets to all surfaces.  Allow the metal prep to remain in the tank for about 45 minutes, rolling the tank every 15 minutes. Then pour it out and rince the tank out again with clean water.
4. Dry.  IMPORTANT!!! The tank MUST be COMPLETELY DRY inside before you add the POR 15!  I used a hairdryer directed into the fill cap next and alot of shaking.  I still took like 2 hours to get it completely dry.
5.  If you have any big eterior to interiior leaks there are several methoods to fix them. (your chioce) but fix them BEFORE you put the POR 15 into the tank.
6.  Open can and stir until a uniform color is achieved. IMPORTANT!  Once you take the top off the can you CANNOT PUT IT BACK ON or the can will EXPLODE!
7. Pour entire contents of can into the tank. Roll the tank SLOWLY to ensure it coats the insides uniformly. (A 1/2 pint can left no excess to dump out..) Outside leaks can be repaired now as well using the mesh and Por15 by brushing Por15 onto the clean surface, applying the mesh, and then more Por15 over the mesh. (Much the same way you would use fiberglass and epoxy)
8.  Allow to dry.  AT LEAST 4 FULL DAYS!!! Before reassembling and refilling the tank.

That should be about as close to right as I can remember. The important stuff should be dead on.  Check the box the stuff came in!  The directions are on a very plain looking piece of paper that may be mixing in with the packing materials..

Damn your good.  If thats from memory, well I'll...follow them to the t.  Deffinetly have a better memory than I.  Thanks, now I can get that done tomorrow.

Boy am I glad I did this.  I had tons of crap come out of the tank.  Just started the metal prep and will be doing the seal tomorrow.  Thanks for the Help Wolf.

if you do the metal prep, you have to seal it right away after it's bone dry (use a hair drier or heat gun) or else it'll flash rust...

:o uhm..I'm in deep trouble then :'(.  I had to go to work and won't get home until around 10 tonight.  How much trouble does this put me in?

I don't know, I never let it sit, but, if you can pick up a little muriatic acid (common in pool suppy places & Home Depot) you can use that, it does the same thing (it might be the same thing, i forget) just be sure to rinse the tank out before you use it so your not mixing chemicals.

you should rinse the tank out between each step anyway and force hot air thru the tank to get it bone dry afterwards (hairdryer)

jasonm.

If you did the Metal Prep right. It will not flash rust after rinsing. IT should leave a zinc phosphate coating(rust proofer).I did mine in the summer. Put the black tank in the 90 degree sun. Dried fast enough for me. No rust.
looks aren't important, if she lets you play by your rules

Just so everyone knows for future reference this is what I received from Por-15: "If flash rusting occurs its ok if your using our tank sealer. Yes, you want to make sure the entire tank is bone dry prior to pouring in the sealer.  You can accomplish this by using a hair dryer or heat gun. Our sealer will stick to the flash rust. Thank you, Mike."

Ken

Thanks again Wolf for the directions!!
