Fitting Handgrips

Does anyone have any tips for fitting handgrips? I had been told that a little dishwashing liquid was the thing to use, but all it seems to have done is lubricate the left hand grip and allow it to slide around on the bar. The grip was impossible to fit before the dishwash liquid. Apparently once left it would glue the grip to the bar but I have left it for 24 hours and it is still as slidey as ever.

I use alcohol, when it dries they are nice and tight.

Clean up your existing mess.  Start dry and clean.  Use hair spray as a combo lubricant and glue.  Spray the bike and the inside of the grips with hair spray.  Slide the grips onto the bike.  Work fast.  Search this forums archives.  This question has been addressed several times before.  Cheers.

Thanks guys, I will have to work on my search skills. I searched but couldn't find anything. Will give the hairspray a try, the wife or kids must have some somewhere. If hairspray doesn't work what sort of alcohol should I use. Would methylated spirits do the job?

:) Johnny Walker would do...its also good for killing weeds, stripping paint, cleans up dog s**t, works wonders on deicing windshields but melts the rubber seal!!! If your really do have extra cash, use meths instead... ;D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D... ;)

BTW...Hairspray works really well... 8)

I used some spray on adhesive.  I think it was for sticking pool liners to pools.  Sticks real good...so good I'll have to cut the grips off.  But, they stay on.  The grips I used did, however seem to pull away from the ends  (may have not sprayed enough adhesive at the very end) so I used a zip tie on the throttle grip to hold it in place.  Hasn't budged.

spit will work too. :o

Yeah but it can remain a bit slippery.  If you hock back a good loogie and spit in in there it'll stick better.  8)

I just lick the inside, it's much more accurate.

Hairspray and a good blast of compressed air down a little hole in the end of the grip, that's the trick.  The air holds the grip away from the bar until you slide into place.  Shut off the air when the grip is where you want it and it's all done.

The compressed air trick sounds kinda neat.  Thanks for the tip.

fret not

Back in the 70s when I worked in a bike shop the MXers told me they used masking tape on the handle bar, then drench it with gasoline and slide the grip on and let it sit in the sun.  According to them, once dry the grips would have to be cut off if they needed to be changed.  If anyone needs tight grips it would be the MXers.  YMMV

some type of glue is usually needed for "foam" grips. Rubber like the originals ...hairspray...but it sets in less than 10 seconds...be fast.
