The snow has finally melted, and as my fingers have longed to grip the throttle and feel the rumble of that oh so familiar vtwin, I struck out. My goal, simply to awaken the sleeping goddess from her slumber. I crept in so as to not awaken the gremlins, removed the tapestry that covered her silver and blue beauty, and removed her monitor that had been keeping her resting peacefully all this time. I had her key ready, knowing that the time would come, and returned it to its rightfull place. With a quick turn, all her lights came on as if they had been waiting for their master to come home. The familiar clicks and hums filled the air as I slid the choke lever over and flipped the throttle a few times. All seemed right as i hit the starter button, until.... crack, click, bang. Again i tried, crank... crack, click, bang. I knew the sound, but how could it be? I replaced the starter clutch already! Again i tried, but the same sound came, could it be? Could after all this time, it would happen again? No this is not happing, crack, click, bang, again! This time it was much louder. I have not heard this sound like this before. Could it be that the starter is bad too? Again i try, click, click, crack, clink, crack, bang! This time I know, she will not come to life today. There is something wrong. Exactly what, I'm not sure at this time, but I know that soon, soon i will hear the roar of the mighty vtwin come to life. With that I am sure. Till next we meet again.

try boosting the battery first with a jump box or off a non running car. the battery may be sulfated even though you had it on a monitor. a weak battery can cause the clutch to slip.

YellowJacket!

Yep, mine does that too when the battery is not putting out enough juice.  Thought it was my starter clutch too.  Check the electrolyte levels in your battery.

What does a volt meter say?  Just a simple check.

I AGREE. If only i could get my hands on a bike that does not need a bloody battery to run, like my first Jawa/yezdi 250 Classic. Had to carry spare 25 w light bulbs because if the rev's went too high they would burn out and the 35 were just too dull :). Oh how i miss that bike

Oh yes after all the years owning a vision I have come to learn that she will not start on her own power if she has sat more that a week. i took out a good battery that i pulled out of my plow truck this winter (not big enough to run the plow and extra lights) and used it to jump off of. My battery in the bike was fully charged reading just over 12v.

I made it out today and tried again after bringing both batteries up to full charge. She tried to start this time before she flat out said NO! After having to hit the starter with a hammer a few times I pulled the starter off and tore it down. had to replace a brush and the communicator. (of course i had spares) then after putting the starter back in and adding a quart of oil i tried again.

No luck. didnt even try to crank the motor. I did make a rookie mistake and didnt test the starter before i put it back in. so it will have to come back out. But it was getting cool outside and this weekend the temps are dropping agian so she will have to wait a another week or so before i get back out there.

I had to put my vision in a room with a heater going to get her fired up.It worked.
