This a down and dirty exerpt from Leather's charging system faq site.

#4. Charging circuit testing and everything else is BEST described at:

In short (excuse the pun) this is what you are trying to do. You check to see if you have the correct DC output. If not, then check to see if the stator wires are good and also producing the correct AC current when engine running. If they are then the regulator is suspect. Check the diodes in the regulator. To be more precise:
1. Output after regulator box should be 14.5 volts DC engine running no load.
2. Each stator wire should have continuity with the others (0.32 ohms by the book).
3. No stator wire should have continuity with ground (short or bad insulation).
4. Engine running, each set of stator wires (1-2,2-3,1-3) should produce 50v AC.
5. Test all 6 diodes to check they block current flow in the correct direction.

From the sound of it, your stator is probably fried, better check your R/R too!

Ok, I changed my stator and my R/R today, after I finished I pulled my battery off the charger (fully charged)  put it back on the bike and hit the start button, nothing happend.  Checked fuses , battery and wires.  Couldnt find anything.  Anxious to see how the new setup performed; I roll-started it.  The bike fired up and the stator was working good!!  But my electronic start still didnt work??  Im beyond frustration now!!  The solinoid just makes a loud click when I hit it.

Sounds like the infamous 'oil-filled' starter. If you haven't put a new seal in your starter, it probably has oil in it and needs to be re-built. Aren't these bikes a hoot?

before you pull the starter, check all your connections first, especially at the battery, you might have just forgotten to tighten it down .

If the bike has 10k miles or more on it and it still has the factory starter oil seal in place then you probably have an oil filled starter.  No V ever dodges this bullit.  The fix isn't too expensive or difficult.  And, if done right, lasts a very long time.  Cheers.

A floppy tach is not unusual. Escpecially between 5-6000rpm. But one that just dies, sometimes is the TCI unit. I had a TCI that was bad. When the bike was started all was fine. But 10 minutes and the bike just would not idle right and the tach bounceds around. I tried repairing it. No luck.
looks aren't important, if she lets you play by your rules

it was my stator and RR.  Replaced them both.  Runs great now, except for my starter wont work??  and the stator cover is leaking.  My fault , I got sloppy and rushed through that part failing to take my time with the gasket :)

Well it was something very simple!!  The battery had very low amps!  It had 13V but only about 20 % amps.  Charged it on another charger and vroom! cranked up! Now tommorow Im redoing the gasket and I should be square for the next 10k. (Lord Willing)
