XZ 400 instrument cluster on a 550?

I managed to pick up a XZ400 parts bike the other day. In spite of kind gifts of parts from fellow forum members, I was unable to repair my old instrument cluster by swapping out the speedometer. (The don't like to have the needles taken out of the dials)

The XZ400 cluster has checked out OK. Not quite as pretty as the XZ550, there is some japanese writing on the dash and the speedo dosen't boast that the bike will go WAY faster than it can.

I presume that  the Japanese writing is above a warning light for when they rode over 80 kmph? Is that right? If it is I will simply remove the lamp.

Does the XZ400 have automatic indicator cancellation?

Thanks

You are correct.  The Japanese it would seem are a very nervous bunch and need to be warned when they get within 20km/h of the speed limit.  If you don't like it I'll bet you can replace the centre piece from your 550 cluster and eliminate the danger writing - the white internal frame that it screws in to is, I think, identical.

I had the same issue as you as my 550 came with a 400 cluster.  I got a 550 speed sensor off someone on here (it just clips into place) a bit of crazy rewiring and my indicators were self cancelling.

Nice one.

It is as you say. I spent a couple of happy hours in the sunshine today modifying  the 400 cluster with my left over  bits from the 550 cluster. (Speedo knackered).

Removed the 80kph speed sensor and light from the 400, dropped the 550 centre coverplate on to the dials to get rid of the Japanese writing, and swapped the instrument cluster wiring loom  over from the 550 along with the self cancelling sensor.

My self cancelling unit may still not work, but everything else checks out OK

Took a few pics. If anyone is interested in a "how to" I can post pics and a description.

Ive got a spare cancelling unit I'm sure.  Let me know if yours doesn't work.

Many thanks. It might be a month or two before I can do a road test. I'd doing a bit of a front fork rebuild and clean up. Thanks for the offer.
