Battery not charging

I went out yesterday and roda for a good hour and a half. I turned the bike off twice during that time when I stopped to see some friends. She started up right away both times. I then was on the loop back home and stoped at another friends house. When I went to start her up again she wouldn't start. I heard the starter clicking and everything just no juice. Fortunatly I took my battery tender with me so I plugged it into my buddies garage and let her charge for about a half hour. Then she started right up. Drove her home, got all the way to the end of my street to turn in and she completely died. No juice again. Ok where should I start looking? Should I do the electrux chart? If so, could someone walk me through using a multimeter? I forgot how to read one. LOL! Any advice would help. Thanks! I will also in the meantime go back and search the past posts.
Thanks!

Do the basic checks first: battery water level correct, cables tight & clean, etc.

put the meter on Volts DC & hook it to the battery, red to positive, black to negitive. crank the bike & watch the voltage, it shouldn't drop below 10volts +/- .05 volt.

see what it's charging at idle, should be around 13.5 V, at 2K rpm it should be around 14.5 -14.7V.  if not, do the Elecrosport (Electrex) flow chart. you'll be looking at a stator, R/R or both.  :(  it's also possable you have oil in the starter if you haven't done the seal.

If it's the (cursed) stator, it's easy enough to test. First, disconnect the stator plug.

Part I: Measure resistance between each white wire and ground. If there is any conductivity, i.e. resistance is low, start looking for a new stator. BTW, ground means the negative battery wire, or the engine/frame.

Part II: measure resistance between each pair of white wires, this time there should be conductivity, some low resistance value like 2 to 4 ohms. If there's no conductivity, start looking for a new stator.

Unless it's been soldered, in which case you'll have to desolder or cut the wires & then test.

Thanks for the quick responses! I will have to put this off until this weekend or next week now. I am out of the office tomorrow and then its probably down to florida for work. And when I am down ther gotta do the grandaughter thing and drive across state to visit the grandma. So my baby will have to wait, but at least it gives me time to print out these suggestions and formulate a game plan. BTW, this is all H2O's fault! I told him I didn't want to answer the question about how many stators and regulator/rectifiers I have changed!  :P

Not my fault!? ? Just an innocent question hoping to share the info with others who've replaced it at least once.? Hope it's something simple, but it sure sounds like a stator or R/R.? ?::)

If you have an accident on a motorcycle, it's always your fault. Tough call, but it has to be that way. You're in the right, and dead -on a bike. The principle is not to have any accident. If you're involved in an an accident, it's because you did not anticipate. Then, by default, you failed.

Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming HOOOOYA lets go again baby !!!!!!

Maybe we can figure out a class action suit against Yamah & the parts supplier who made the original stators!  (That's how a "real" lawyer should answer.  :D )

Ok well it takes me forever to be able to sit down and work on the bike. Now that things have finally calmed down a bit at my house I started to troubleshoot the charging problem. Well I took the stuff you guys had sent me to help me troubleshoot and two of my vision books and started. Well after 2 hours of getting totally confused with the multimeter and colors of wires and the heat, I finally gave up. I went inside, started cleaning off my desk and then I found the electrux troubleshooting chart. I started to read it and lo and behold it made much more sense to me than the others. LOL! Don't forget I am naturally blonde. LOL!  ;) So tonight it will be back to the grind to figure out this issue. Let me tell you I had better get different readings tonight than I got yesterday. LOL!  ::)I will keep ya posted!

Well, I sat down again Monday night and still got weird readings. But then I noticed some issues with the fuses and the chart said to check there too so I will do some changes that are long overdue. The I went back inside and reread the directions from the chart and realized that i totally screwed up again. I was doing everything in reverse. LOL! I guess I learned my lesson about doing things when I am tired. DOH! and double DOH!!! I guess I should have never dyed my hair burgundy, I should have kept it blonde. LOL! SO now you know, you can change the hair color but ya can't change a dumb blonde. LOL! Oh well, that's how ya learn. At least I am getting to spend some kind of quality time with the bike even if I can't ride her. Back to the beginning and start over again tonight.
