Without the fairing the shorty risers are a must! That extra lean in to the wind helps tremendously.

I'm 6" small and found that the upright position of the 82 bars was almost painfull on long rides.  With the 83 bars, I was more comfortable, had felt that I had better feel.  Don't forget the foot pegs.

Zore, like you I am six feet also and really get bad back of my neck pains on any trip much over an hour. Perhaps I too need to look for some 83 risers, interesting.

OK, can confirm that the ZX400 risers, foot pegs, gear and brack levers are the same as the 550 Euro 1992 and US 1993.  Maybe I should start collecting 400 here for a parts stock.

I'm pretty sure this has been answered, but do the 83 risers fit on an 82?

Direct bolt on swap.  Cable lengths are different but they work fine.  Probably have to put the 82 cables on an 83 if you wanted to put the tall risers on it.  Don't know why anyone would want to, though.

If you have an accident on a motorcycle, it's always your fault. Tough call, but it has to be that way. You're in the right, and dead -on a bike. The principle is not to have any accident. If you're involved in an an accident, it's because you did not anticipate. Then, by default, you failed.

One thing I also noticed is that the 82's have a notch down the side where the cable stay slides in but the 83'2 do not.  Its a good reference when looking at pictures on ebay to tell the difference quickly.

That is the first thing I check for.  Second is location of the handlebar pinch bolt - kind of depends on the angle of the photo.
