As I mentioned, I am about to take delivery of a couple of 82's and lots of parts.
Rick Haverkamph of Buckeye Performance (http://www.buckeyeperformance.com/)is getting the better of the two running for me. He has already had problems finding o-rings for the starter. (I provided him info from our tech pages here). I hope he has it running by Friday the 2nd of Nov.

Would someone be so kind as to maybe come up with a short checklist of what you would have me check first. i.e.
1. Brake arm to rear drum bolts.
2.
3.

Tiger

:) Here are a couple of point's, in no particular order, to start the list... :o

1 - Check all fluid level's prior to starting!!!

2 - Run an electic's test for Stator and R/R... http://www.ridersofvision.net/Technical/fault_finding.pdf For this to be done properly you MUST have a FULLY CHARGED battery... ;)

3 - Remove & flush out your gas tank...completely. Once re-installed, install an in-line motorcycle gas filter...(Not an automotive one!!!)...Fill gas tank with fresh gas and a can of berryman's or similar carb cleaner.

4 - Install new gas and vacuum hose line's.

5 - Disconect the YIC's unit and plug the two connection's.

6 - Because they are a P.I.T.A$$ to remove and therefore over looked ::) Remove and replace the two spark plug's.

:) Neeeeeeext...

Tiger - you remembered plugs but forgot about plug wires & caps.   ;)

Therefore, when doing plugs, also change the plug caps & wires.

Caps are readily available from online sources - or your mechanic should be able to locate them.  Be careful - when I got mine, the part number in the shop's catalog correlated to the wrong caps.

Wire (7mm copper core non-resistor) is available in bulk from independent motorcycle parts shops.  May be available at auto parts shops as well.

Also, check the tire condition.

If you have an accident on a motorcycle, it's always your fault. Tough call, but it has to be that way. You're in the right, and dead -on a bike. The principle is not to have any accident. If you're involved in an an accident, it's because you did not anticipate. Then, by default, you failed.

I got my starter nose o rings from my local Yamaha dealer , could'nt find them anywhere else in this one horse town.  They were 2 weeks away and 14.00 each !  I initially ordered 4 to have spares , but  not at that price!

My mechanic said he could not get the seals from Yamaha.

h2olawyer

It depends on the seals being sought.  The spring type seal for the inside of the nose of the starter has never been a Yamaha item.  The O-rings have been available & may still be.  There are two large O-rings for the starter body & one for the starter -- engine interface.

Find a Chicago Rawhide seal to replace the internal nose seal - available at auto parts stores or likely bearing supply outlets.
