just bought a vision. 82. Not running... tried it, starter turned slow, removed, cleaned, re-installed... GOOD. Added additional grounds for battery and R/R. Cleaned carb jets I could find!! drained some nasties out. She runs.. 14+v running. Carbs are fine. Tick tick tick.. sound familiar!! lol.. Ive been reading.. OK.. got the cover off.. visually, it looks as though the starter clutch bolts are tight.. I need to get a puller. Kid Jedi said the napa 3 pronged universal would work. I need to find out about the locking key for the balancer shaft.. Where can I get one??? Anything else I should know?? Read about rear brake bolts.. tomorrow. I need a gasket for the left cover, a throttle cable, and I dont think the light in the instrument cluster works... Otherwise.. NICE.. other than the tick tick, shes smooth and strong! Vid of her running and my other bikes and stuff at  http://www.youtube.com/funkamongus20 Thank you, in advance, for all the info Ill be finding here!! Rubber side down, britches between the ditches, and knees to the breeze!!!

:) Hi and welcome to the ROV, the best damn place a Vision can bring its owner ;D ;D ;D... 8)

Seems like your handy with wrenches and such...just as well when you own a "V"  ;D :D :D... ;)

Before removing, make a cardboard template of the left side cover and mark were the cover bolts go...as you remove the bolts, put them into the holes in the template so you put them back in the correct place during rebuild. The cover, once all the bolts, gear shift, etc are removed will just pull off...DO NOT USE LEVERS to remove. The magnets will want to pull it back on, so watch your finger's!!! Once off, stick a rag in the oil hole under the flywheel to save any possible entry into the engine of part's, dirt, etc. Do a search and you will find a lot of detailed posts regarding this task...some with picture's 8)

Although not recommended, I use a three arm puller for flywheel removal and have not had an issue yet...approx' 1/2 dozen starter clutch fixes done to date (on various Vision). Put an old bath towel or something similar underneath the working area to catch the starter clutch springs, etc when the flywheel brakes loose...and stay to the side of the flywheel!!! :o The key will, in most case stay on the shaft...

The instrument cluster bulb's, both lights and signal indicators are available at your local automotive store...#192.

I buy gasket material and make the side cover gaskets, again, available from your local automotive store ;)

'82 Vision, Pearl Orange finish, lots of up-grades!!!

If you mean a locking key as in to hold the flywheel from moving when you try to undo the nut; Either use an impact and hold the flywheel with your hand, or wedge a lead wheel weight in the balance gear mesh with the crank gear.

Clean and grease or eliminate the stator-regulator plug. When it develops corrosion it quickly overheats and melts the plug down.
Flush and refill the coolant with non-silicate coolant (i think the cooling system kind of goes ignored here  ???)
Flush the brake fluid
Change the oil (AND FILTER)

You should be good after that stuff, you'll have problems for sure but those are the important things to service right away. If your coolant is south, or goes south, it'll overheat the bike and or take out the water pump seal with it. The brake fluid is a pretty important safety feature. I've seen oil filters go south and seize engines so its best to get on that right away.
