After dipping and re-assembling the carbs, my 400 is still running far too rich. Coughing and spluttering and slow to return to idle after revving. The left exhaust pipe is smoking at the engine side and looks like its dripping petrol. Other side seems ok.

I didn't pull the jets out. I'm not too confident that they are spraying a good cone shape. Seems quite a narrow jet!

I have to admit, I didn't check the float level after the carbs were installed. The measurement seemed fine when disassembled and I wasn't sure what was the best sequence.

I don't quite understand yet, the posts that talk about some adjustments you can make to he mixture and how you make them. Perhaps this is all I need to do.

I will have to get some pipe to make a manometer, but haven't done yet—again looking for some input here if that is the next logical step.

Any thoughts appreciated.

1st logical step is to make sure they are synched.  Then, make sure that the float levels are at the correct height.

I used about six feet of clear vinyl tubing with ATF and nothing else and it synched up fine.  BDC

The low speed idle jets adjust and are on the very lower part of the throat as seen on the left side of the bike.  The book has the starting spec on the number of turns from close.  The float levels are critical and the needle valves need to seat right to seal the carbs from puking on overflow.

I would study the manual and start again.  It is either right or not.

I learned a long time ago, That when you make a mistake in a small boat, you go swimming.   That rule does apply to the Vision carbs.  It is all clear in the book or with Lucky's CD.

So, study, study, and carefully fix it.   Don't get in a hurry and don't get discouraged.

You can fix it.

It really all starts with carb synq.  if the synq is off, you cant properly adjust anything else...

Thanks guys for all the good advice.

Double check for air leaks first -

Std mixture setting is 3 1/2 turns out for the 400
If you can't be arsed building a manometer I have a nice set of vertical gauges.  Can help you out next w/end

That would be great. Fancy riding over for a beer. I have acquired another 400! Can't get the first to start up to test it at moment, so any thoughts would be great. I have just started cleaning the second set of carbs, which I can put in to see if any change.
