I have a 1982 Vision I'm working on and I've noticed the rear brake sometimes gets stuck. If I push the brake lever all the way down, the rear brake will stay locked up. I'm wondering if the best thing to do would be to open up the drum brake and clean it out or if I should simply buy a new brake or wheel.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

There is so little in the rear drum, I would just open it up, clean it, lube it, adjust it, and put it back together.

:) Behind the aluminum plate were your brake pedal resides is a return spring...is yours still there/engaged ??...if not re-engage it or replace it...VOILA!!!

If the spring is there and attached, here is what I would do:

Remove the rear wheel from your Vision. Remove the drum plate from the brake drum...remove the brake shoes (fold them in to each other...but watch your fingers!!!). Remove the actuator shaft from the drum plate and give it a good clean...lube it (I use a high heat anti-seize) and reinstall it. If the brake shoes are still good, clean the glaze off with some emery cloth/sand paper and reinstall...or replace with a new set.
Next, remove the brake pedal and foot rests, remove the aluminum plate and push out the brake pedal shaft. Clean, lube and reinstall the shaft in to the aluminum plate...Put it all back together, (not forgetting to replace the two brake bar fasteners!!). Adjust as required... 8)

Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming HOOOOYA lets go again baby !!!!!!

'82 Vision, Pearl Orange finish, lots of up-grades!!!

And, your brake shoes could be worn out. You have to remove the rear wheel to check anyway so let us know what you find out.

My spring is engaged and functioning, the problem is definitely with the drum. I'll post again once I open it up.
