Ok, just fixed a bunch of exhaust leaks and I can hear the starter clutch trying to get out!

All right now for the $40,000.00 question.

Can the bolts be tightend without removing the engine cover?

I don't have the time right now  for the permanent fix on Lucky's site but can't listen to that noise without going crazy.

Any one try?

Thanks,

hmmm starter clutch bolts and not remove the side cover,,,, nope,, osmosis doesnt work on vision motors,, i tried,, so sorry
it only takes about 1 hour  if you read the instruction 3 or four times, and get a good quality puller. i bought junk, so i had to make a trip or three to get a good puller . good luck ,,

Just a note if you go through with it. Luckys site recommended 1.25 8s if I remember right. Which is what I used, but they were to long...were hitting the screws on my stator. So I just Dremeled them down near the surface, but not enough to cut off my peening or the MIG weld job I did to the ends. Basically, just push the cover on hand tight and turn it over a couple times to see if the cover hops. Might have just meen mine. Some reason my machines always seem to be special >:(

I don't recommend that you use the bike with a noisey starter clutch , the damage increases the longer you let it go.

Well, add me to the ever-growing list of starter clutch-changers :'(. Tested stator and found one leg with continuity to ground, so time to change it anyway while I'm in there.  Still haven't figured out my main fuse blowing issue, most recently noticed that the ignition fails to both cylinders simultaniously, then fuse blows 1-1.5 seconds later.

Bullet, have you tried a different TCI?

Walt,

Haven't, don't have another, don't know where to get one without paying more than the original cost of bike.  Any way to check this, have digital meter (still learning how to use it ;D) but don't know exactly where to start.  I'm great mechanically, just not very knowledgeable electrically.  Haven't check sidestand switch(suspect it's going bad) don't know how to bypass it.  Haven't corrected the dreaded tach/overrev wire, but plan to.  Has the rev limiter ever caused a complete ignition cut-out?  I'm looking at the wiring diagram in my manual, but can't make sense of it.  As usual, any help greatly appreciated.

You might want to try the swap shop. I got a spare some time ago from a fellow member, only gave $35 for it. I haven't tested it but he said he tried it out on his before he sent it. There seems to be some parting out activity going on right now.
If you can't get one, let me know and you can try my spare.

Last summer there were at least  10 of them on ebay , from 5.00 to 100.00    and as walt said try asking around here,  I might even come up with one.
