H20, those rubber plugs are still available from Yamaha, and should be a press fit in the hole, if they get too old and hard they leak oil pressure needed for cam bearing lube. If they fell out when you removed the cover it would be a good idea to replace them.

Rob , I use compressed air to lift them up . have a small instrument screwdriver handy to stop them from dropping back into place.

Go soothingly on the grease mud, as there in lurks the skid demon

"backing up" to the shim removal. I have a 4" thin flat balade screw driver that fits into the "notch" that you are to pry  at. NOW, you should put something parallel w/the cam for a pivot for leverage, rag, another screw driver, etc.. Otherwise you can put nasty marks where the gasket sits. Now my screw driver is thin and bends, and at a point in time there is enough "spring" in the steel screw driver to launch the shim out. Also the screw driver is NOT to be hardened too much. As that will scratch the shim and sometime the tip can "chip"  and leave itself bits behind.  At least that's how it works for me.
looks aren't important, if she lets you play by your rules

Hi!
For me I got a Yamaha Xj 900 Diversion 1997 year model.
It's like the big brother of the XZ 550 Vision.
More power 90Hp. Better top-speed 200+km/h.
Nice to ride long distance.  Aircooled, no fuss with water and stuff......

The plan for my old XZ Vision is that I will restore it to original as close I can..
Next Year it is an oldtimer and become cheaper in insurance and so.

That's the tip from me:

Take care and be safe on the roads!
