Reinstalled rebuilt carbs and sorting problems. My friend / helper reversed the round adjusters on carb sync rod so butterflies open completely, can't understand why stock setting would only open partially. What sort of problems will this cause?  Plus, what serch term to use to find posts on idle hunting, rising and falling? And,  how to find the secret YICS air chambers volume? Also, if tapping rear carb eventually stops overflow at idle, will keeping gas ultra clean and dry be o-k or must I plan on a repair? Thanks.

Trash caught between the needle valve and its seat allows fuel to pass through the valve uncontrolled.  An in line fuel filter will capture such trash and alleviate the problem.  If the valve/seat interface is pitted the valve will always leak.  Since you can stop the leak by tapping the carb, trash would seem to be the culprit.  Such tapping wouldn't overcome a pitted seat/valve interface sourced leak.

A Tip for you:  A way to possibly flush trash (and water) out of the float bowl is to
(1) ensure that the gas tank is at least half full
(2) put the fuel petcock in its' "pri" position
(3) the remove the threaded main jet access plug from the float bowl and allow several table spoons of  fuel to drain out while gently tapping the float bowl.

Hopefully, whatever trash is in the bowl will be flushed out.

Of course, it is understood that an in line fuel filter is critical for clean carbs.

Cheers.

--the synq rod was on wrong from a previous event. the butterflys should open completely.
--your idle hunts due to an air leak, usually a leaky YICS.
--search YICS for the volume it was in a post a couple of months ago
--QBS is correct, trash in the carbs. they probably need to be dipped.  sometimes these carbs will clog up after a short time after a cleaning, the vibration of the engine seems to loosen more grunge in the passages.

I forget how many different carbs there are, these are 82's with an update kit. Those cylinder-shaped adjusters had a cutaway section that stopped the throttle wheel so perfectly it looked stock, but I feel better now, thanks for the tips!
