My bike goes bump in the night

Hey guys I got one for you.

I recently bought a second "V" on ebay (the clip on bike). It hadn't run since last year but I heard it turn over so that was good enough for me. (I was originally interested in the fairing and spare parts).

So tonight I thought lets throw in the battery from my other bike and give it a shot. So I first disabled the YICS and hit the start button. It fired up immediately. I let it run for a few minutes and then just let it stall out.

I hit the button again and I heard this metalic bang from the right side. I tried it again and it started for a second and stalled and again the metalic bang as it cranked. My question is what in starter clutch assembly would cause a loud bang but still crank over?

I plan to tear it apart but I just thought I'd throw it out for an educated guess.

Thanks,
Dan

If the bike has over about 15k miles on it and the starter clutch hasn't been properly reattached, the sound you hear is probably that of a normal V in need of having its' starter clutch stuck back on.  They sometimes make that noise and it sounds absolutley deadly.  Like a major hammer blow to the heart of the engine.

Another common possability:
if the cranking speed is low due usually to a weak charging system/battery or excessive resistance in the starter circut or oil in the starter, then the engine can "kick back"
it sounds kinda like: "KITHWACK!!" a metalic snapping sound...

OK, so  either way it doesn't sound like a major issue. The sound is pretty nasty "KITHWACK!!" is a good description. This weekend I'm planning to put a stator, the stater clutch bolts and starter seal on my original V. So once I get that back together, I'll tear into the clip-on bike and see what's going on in there.

At first I thought I had a bent value but it wouldn't have run as well as it did if that were the case. I know the starter has oil in it so. I'll start there first. I have another starter seal already on order.

I'll let you know what I find

Thanks,
Dan
