I need to rebuild my starter motor. I've read in this forum about using generic brushes from an auto parts store (I think I remember this part correctly) and getting an oil seal that will out perform the original, which is now leaking. Can someone direct me to the place where I read these articles or just give me some direction for getting these parts. Thanks,  Mark

For good starter rebuild instructions, go back to the ROV Home page, click on Technical and again on Starter Rebuild. Good instructions with photos. Other good info on the Home page too. The starter brushes are in the Parts Resource Catalog, they are available from Yamaha, gives the part number and price.

The starter seal size is 20x35x5.  You may be able to get one from your local NAPA dealer - Chicago Rawhide #7917.  This is a 20x35x6 seal but it will fit.  Another possible place to find it is a bearing supply store.  I used a 20x35x7 but others have said they couldn't get the starter nose back together with that size so try your best to find a 5 or 6 mm spring reinforced seal.  Either single or double lip styles will work, just make sure it has the reinforcing spring.

If you have an accident on a motorcycle, it's always your fault. Tough call, but it has to be that way. You're in the right, and dead -on a bike. The principle is not to have any accident. If you're involved in an an accident, it's because you did not anticipate. Then, by default, you failed.
