Engine Case Temperature

I want to use a RTV type silicone sealer on my engine case to stop an oil leak from the oil cooler fitting.

I've had good results with other motors using the black Selleys type gasket maker. The tube I have is rated to 175 degrees C. I've also got a high temp one rated to 315 degrees C. Doing a test sticking two bits of similar metal together (at room temp), the low temp version seems to have more strength, prob due to fewer additives, so I'm keen to use that one.

Just wondered if anyone knew how high the motor temp will get around the sump area. It will be holding in hot oil so will need to be able to withstand that temp at least.

Here's an older thread on the subject

I put a thermostat on my oil cooler setup and it bypasses until (I believe) 180 deg. It does do its job until the bike is warmed up.

On a related note, I noticed my 45deg. angle fitting is starting to weap at the cover even though I JB welded it.
A couple of pieces fell off so I'm not sure what I'm going to do yet. Maybe it was the teflon tape on the threads I used.

As you know, not much meat on the cover for threads, so I have to think about that patch job coming up

I'm not sure what i may have done differently than you guys, but i have no fittings/case related leaks. i do have one good leak at the nylon line/fitting that goes to the pressure guage, but that's simply cut the line, replace the ferrule & tighten back up.

I want to use a RTV type silicone sealer on my engine case to stop an oil leak from the oil cooler fitting.

I've had a lot of success with Dow Corning 730 RTV Sealant, it's solvent, fuel & oil resistant, we use it for assembling and repairing aircraft fuel lines and tanks.   It has good bonding properties and works in the heat range of -57 to + 260°C.

Should be available thru Blackwoods enginnering supplies (they maybe called Blackwoods-Paykels now).

I'll fix it, pass me a bigger hammer!

I just did my stator about a week ago and have put almost 1000kms on it. I used mopar black rtv (cause its free at work ;D) and not a drop of oil from the side cover, and last week when it was really warm and running with no rad fan relay, it got really hot almost to the red mark before i jumped the fan connector, maybe i just got lucky but so far so good

Extent

I ran over bits of the engine once with my infrared thermometer after a spirited ride and the hottest temps I remember seeing were about 210* F on the hot side of the radiator.  The bits of the engine were all more around the 180 - 190 * range.
Rider1>No wonder, the Daytona has very sharp steering and aggressive geometry.  It's a very difficult bike for a new rider.
Rider2>Well it has different geometry now.
