Long shot here but thought I would give it a try. I am not good with mechanical work, I am painter by trade. So wondered if anyone would like to trade clean carbs for some paint work? If anyone is interested here is what I done to my Vision.     http://webmail.wavecable.com/~d.stevens/   I used stencils on my Vision, so not to confuse me as being an artist. But I would offer a baked on basecoat clear coat finish. You pick color and give me a paint code I will supply the paint and clear cost.

Where do you live?  You see, my mechanical skills are a smidge over my painting skills.  No one runs a clear coat better than I do.  I live in New Jersey and although my vision doesn't need paint, my monster sure could use some help.

:) Looks good..... 8) What are the exhaust's off of...... ???
Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming HOOOOYA lets go again baby !!!!!!

'82 Vision, Pearl Orange finish, lots of up-grades!!!

I live in washington state, and the exhaust is not something i did to the bike would rather have the mac on there. I believe my wifes uncle got them out of jc whitney. They are loud when you get into the throttle.

I suppose I can rebuild them and throw them on my bike to make sure all is well.

Ok, I butchered a great paint job with a sub-par clearcoating.... My mechanical skills are far better than my painting skills, but I am working on that....

What is the best way to get a good clear coat?
A bad marrage is like dirty carbs... It just makes everything else suck.

clear coat is easy. it just takes time. first lay a layer down. not too think. just enough that you see it start to come togeter then let it sit 15-30min. then get a bottle of soap and water and wet sand it. watch out for the edges. then when it all feels smooth put another layer of clear one it and repete.  you want at least three layers for a showroom shine. when done with the wet sanding on the last coat get some good buffing compond and buff it till its smooth. its all in the wet sanding and buffing. if you put too much clear on and it runs then all you got to do is do a little more sanding in that spot.

So I should not have complete coverage on the first coat?

no if you will see it start to come together just before its solid. it will look kind of like wavy look. if you put too much on you will see it start to run. the best way to learn is get some pratice materal to paint. spay it thicker and thicker till it starts to run. you want it to almost run. if it was a screw you would want to back off one turn if you know what i mean. just remember if you put too much on all you got to do is do a little more wet sanding. just take your time and it should come out fine.

Lucky

it runs because the new layer has solvents that kind of 'reliquify' the previous layers, correct?

I have used all kinds of paints some are different from others but the concept pretty much the same. A good paint gun with the right fluid tip helps. Right now we use Martin senour paints. Personally dupont or ppg I feel is better. Also runs temp  is a good thing to have control on too, cold will run right to the ground to hot wont be smooth. I am interested for sure.  This is my attempt at painting.  I was using a (spelling) devilbis gun with chroma system.  I'm looking at either the new Mazda, scion, dodge copper (orange).  Obviously, it would be ideal to get your entire bike, but Washington state to New Jersey, that's about as far as far can be so my plan is, get your carbs, dip and rebuild them, throw them on my bike when I'm done.  You'll need to fine tune them to your bike, but they should be pretty close.  Let me know if this sounds good for you.

This is what I have.

It's a tank, fender, tail section and 2 side panels.  The only thing that sort of concerns me is the logistics of sending the stuff and getting it back.  But I'm certainly interested.

Well I had painted the bike dark emerald green at first.  I used spray cans and truth be told, it was the best paint job.  But it didn't last.  It's not very fuel friendly.  I then sprayed it light blue.  It wasn't exactly the shade of blue I was hoping for and people were looking at me a little funny.  So I figured I'd man it up a little and dial some of the fem out by putting some flames on it.  Either way, I screwed up the clear coat both times.  Other than my really bad paint jobs, the bike is an absolute hoot to ride.

I bet!

I'm very jealous!  I would love to own a monster!

Next riding season I hope to add an older 600-1000CC Sport bike or Sport tourer(like an FZ6, an older GSXR or FZR1000)
