trivia for those wondering about dave's fairing--

in mid 1982, yamaha had a need for "sport" fairings, as they did not produce enough of them. as the production of oem fairirng was going to require retooling, yamaha did the next best thing, they bought them from an outside source---- Craig vetter ,inc.

the short ,square fairing is the original yamaha made sport fairing, the "shark nose " fairing is actually a vetter ,inc "rooster" fairing, brand stamped yamaha and a part number added .vetter also made the quicksilver line of fairings, they fit all mid size bikes, with oem specific mount kits ,available at additional cost.

the third feature that was available is th emost rare of all,, a seat top trunk, ,it served as a small trunk, and as a back reat for "slab top"or shallow curve seats.
unfortunately , there are only two examples of this seat top unit that can be found, but they may be out there--- one is on the yamaha vision in the ads for vetter fairings(see in the ad cd that was in forum before) and that bike belongs to the vetter museum.
the second one is in the vetter warehouse, with all plans and documentation, but will not be produced again

my source: craig vetter, 2006, after several e-mails, we managed to get info together(had to send him pictures to remind him of the seat top trunk ,but he found it in products design files .

one of these days, maybe we can get reckon a copy of that pic,,, might get some new ones built!?!

I've got the MAy 82 Cycle World with the ad in it.  Now that you mention it, I never noticed it on the bike since the ad is kind of dark.  I took a pic of the ad and will post it shortly if I can clean it up a bit.

Edit: heres the pic.  kinda cruddy since I don't have a scanner.

wow... good history lesson...

honestly, I don't see the resemblence between the rooster and the shark. the roosters I have seen look chubbier. I think some had stereo slots.

to me, the shark looks like a cross between the rooster and the sting

Mind you my tires are a set of Yokohama's installed in 1989 but even still I was scrapping the bracket on the mac as well as the foot peg at deals gap.  If you are touching pegs, you'll touch the mac at about the same time.

I have seen a Rooster & my old Shark side by side - they are different.  The Shark may have been produced by Vetter Fairings, but they are most definitely NOT the same as the Rooster.  It is closer in appearance to the Sting but that one is still not the same as a Shark.  Vetter did make quite a few fairings for several motorcycle companies who re-badged them with their logos.

My source for the Shark / Rooster difference is a side by side comparison.

For additional info on the Rooster & Sting, see the link below - scroll toward end of page.

If you have an accident on a motorcycle, it's always your fault. Tough call, but it has to be that way. You're in the right, and dead -on a bike. The principle is not to have any accident. If you're involved in an an accident, it's because you did not anticipate. Then, by default, you failed.

Ill be darn ! ;D I got one of those exact same rooster fairings at a garage sell last year ! It came with the same color scheme and a screen also ! ;D For only 2 bucks !!! Didnt look like it would fit the vision ,but for 2 bucks I couldnt pass it up .

They look like they're for a round headlight.  May fit with the light change & some custom brackets.  Wonder if there's an 8-Track available to put in it?   :D

I take it no one makes a set of slip on's that will simply fit into the stock headers? All they'd need would be the mounts welded on.
