I thought I had fixed my missing cylinder problem by putting spitfire in the tank, but it was a sad delusion..... I'm going to rebuild the carbs and replace spark plugs and see how it goes.

1.  I have an XZ400.  How do I tell which model rebuild kit I need?
pm member XZV2 (or go to www.xz550.nl) he may know if the 550 carb kits will work or do a search for XZ400 there's a couple members out there.

2.  What special tools do I need for the carbs other than 2 x rebuild kits (ebay) and new hoses?  Do I need vacuum gauges (http://www.carbtune.com/carbdtls.html) or a colortune kit or can this be done without?

the only special "tool" you need is the $4 manometer... go here: http://www.xz550.com/art_files/4dollarmano.jpeg

3.  Where can I get disk pads? Should I get the disks skimmed? they are a little rusty, but not too bad..

you might want to ask member Glyn (pickteam@xtra.co.nz) and see where he gets his parts... there's not much discussion here about resurfacing rotors

4.  Is there anything else I should do while I am at it?
plug wires? caps?
do that stuff and start you own post so it will be easier to answer your questions

Hahaha, thankyou Lucky. You give me hope! We'll see, I just ordered the rebuild kits. And yes, I change the oil on my car, and coincidently changed the oil on the bike when I got it.

8) Then you CAN do the carb's on your "V"... 8) You have your buddy "HOPE"  ;) and the ROV 'Family" to help you along ;D ;D ;D... ;)...and Lucky wasn't kidding about heather 8) Unless you have a problem with a married, pregnant, very capable woman helping you :o ::) ;D ;D ;D :D :D :D :D :D... ;)

Here's a question: Do I want to buy the 2 carb rebuild kits for 65.00, or would it be easier to buy an entirely new set of "CLEAN" carbs??

Get a quote from Lucky or RickG and send'em your carbs. I did it 4 years ago and have been riding (except for routine repairs here and there) ever since.

That's very close by. Maybe one day I'll see her out on her V.
