I'm going to finish replacing the wounded side case today, and though I'd share a progress pic of the used low voltage / Virago I installed last July and almost 3,000 miles ago...

looks just like when I put it in.... nice caramel color, not blackened or crispy at all

JOY!

well, I was going to share, but the upload folder is full  :(

that sounds interesting, I remember reading all about it when you did it, now I don't remember what was required to use that stator?  My current stator is a used Shadow unit, now it's about toast, I just got another one off ebay, and plan to install it..  maybe I should do one of those, instead.

:) I'm running the same one as N_V in "The Mistress". The temperature's have been in the 90's the last few week's and I put about 450 miles on her last weekend at Wolf's OnROV ride, noooooooo problem, so far...touch wood/cross finger's...where's that lucky rabbit's foot ;)

the stator is an OEM Virago 750... slightly smaller in diameter and a bit wider than the Vision's.....
my bike now charges at around 13.7 at idle, then jumps up to 14.5ish above 2k rpm.

when Tiger's stator toasted, I brought up two; a Virago and a VT500 ascot... he picked the Virago stator...

hmmm, maybe they're really Viagara stators  :o ...... designed not to let you down  :D :D

:) So, what your saying N_V is that maybe the answer to all our stator issue's is to drop a Viagra tablet in the oil on a regular basis to keep the charge up :o ;D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D... ;)

If you have an accident on a motorcycle, it's always your fault. Tough call, but it has to be that way. You're in the right, and dead -on a bike. The principle is not to have any accident. If you're involved in an an accident, it's because you did not anticipate. Then, by default, you failed.

I'll chime in here,...I ran virago's for MANY, MANY years,...dependable, fast, and harley guys HATE THEM,...so when you hop up an 84, or an 85 XV1000, you end up with a 10 second 1/4 miler, which is VERY easy to get just about any harley guy to want to race you for money (all at the track, of course), now a harley weighs in at about 500-600lbs soaking wet, and a like prepped virago is MAYBE 375lbs,...so you get the idea, I made quite a few dollars off of unsuspecting HD owners,..of course after about a year of this (wed and thur nite drags) no one would race me any more.

whats the point?   I rode 750's, 900's, 1000's, and 1100's (about 8 bikes in all) over a period of about 15 years, probably a total of 175,000 miles and rarely EVER changed a battery, NEVER cleaned electrical connectors etc, etc,...
and NEVER HAD EVEN ONE CHARGING SYSTEM FAILURE,..in fact when I worked for berkeley yamaha (6 years total) I can't even remember a virago coming in with a charging system malady.(it was all carb issues)

so when my stator goes ka-phlooey,...I'll hop on up to hayward cycle salvage, and grab one of the 15 or 20 virago stators he probably has up there,......

now on to the caveat,,...whatever you do don't EVER GET ANY PARTS OFF OF A VIRAGO EARLIER THAN 84,...EVER,...the early ones had about as many problems as our beloved V's do, but because viragos sold like VW bugs,..and did for well over 18 years, they worked out all the major problems by the (much improved) 1984 model year.

so I'd get any virago stator, 500cc on up, 84 or later,.......

just my .02

Thanks for the info.

The Harley guys hate them?!?  Can't imagine why - light, fast & dependable - sounds like the antithesis of H-D.   ;D
