Just a hello and grettings. I am looking to get a Vision as a good starter bike for my son. I ride a Venture and am active over in the Venturers.Org group.

I used to own a 750 Seca in the late 80's and loved it. The Vision looks like one of the neatest bikes Yamaha made and I would like to pick one up.

I see some good leads here in the For Sale and on Ebay.

Looks like a great bunch of folks here.

Welcome Matt!

it all depends on what you want to spend & how far your mechanical skills extend.  there isn't much on the Vision that is hard to do, we've figured out all the faults (mostly)

there are a few right now in the Swap shop, & check your local Craigslist.org too.

You'll love the bike & we are here to help.

Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming HOOOOYA lets go again baby !!!!!!

Welcome to ROV, Matt!

As you are likely aware, the Vision engine is basically 1/2 of the original Venture engine.  Much of the same development went into both of them.  You could choose a lot worse for a starter bike for your son.   8)

Many of us feel this is one of the greatest bikes ever made - despite what the dealers felt about them.   ::)  As Lucky said, we have figured out fixes for about all the issues these bikes have.  They're not difficult & we're here for support - both moral & mechanical.

If you have an accident on a motorcycle, it's always your fault. Tough call, but it has to be that way. You're in the right, and dead -on a bike. The principle is not to have any accident. If you're involved in an an accident, it's because you did not anticipate. Then, by default, you failed.

Guys I am located just outside of Bloomington Indiana.  I just moved here back in January from New Bern, NC.
I am a Yamaha fan.

80 650 Maxim was about my first
86 750 Seca
99 Venture
06 Venture

The only one I still have is the 06.

BTW, the things I am reading about stators is making me think twice about getting a Vision...

Lucky

what your seeing about stators is the most troublesome item, but keep in mind a couple of things:

you don't hear about them when there is no problem, so for A-L-L those Visionarys out there the average is still pretty low.

We are constantly reserching & working on the problem, the 'cure' isn't far off.

mostly once you replace them, & know how to keep an eye on them, they remain fairly dependable, & even if they fail agin, replacement is not that big a deal.

considering the amount of knowlage you have behind you (here), stator condition should be a haggeling point, not a deal breaker.

I'm having the most problems with stators - by far.  I still say it's a great bike.  I've got the problem on mine narrowed down to a couple possibilities and am running an experiment.  It may have been a faulty R/R - or there could be a harmonic vibration peculiar to my V & its flywheel.  I'll know if it has been the flywheel in about another 850 - 1500 miles.  I just installed a beefier aftermarket R/R with the latest stator.  If I go through another stator quickly, I'm pretty sure it is the flywheel at fault.  Most people get at least 5,000 miles from a stator & some get tens of thousands.

There is a current project in the works to hopefully cure the problem.  Some of it has been discussed in the 'baked stator' topic.  As explained to me, it sounds promising.  Since I promised not to discuss what it is all about, I'll keep it confidential until the project is in the final testing stages.  Besides, I'm kind of an idiot when it comes to electrics.   ::)  If I tried to explain it, I'd just get it all wrong anyway.

Don't let  the stator problem throw you. I have replaced one stator in  over 20,000 miles . Think of it as an elaborate oil change that only has to be done every 5 years.

I got my V on June 1st this year and found the stator bad within the first week. I haven't had an issue yet and I have over 5,000 miles on it now.

Ok guys, I am convinced to dive in and get one (actually two) and a bunch of parts with the deal. Will keep you posted on my progress. Should be able to get the bikes in the next two weeks.

One was running last year but I am told the starter is off at the moment due to some oil getting in there. The other bike is not running, but the motor is not siezed and should not take much to get it going. A buddy, Rick Haverkamp who owns Buckeye Powersports near Cincinati is going to take a look at them for me and tell me what they need.  http://www.buckeyeperformance.com

Wilkommen, 'Gunny.  I am extremely happy that MotorPlow was listening on the Spam-Infested Yahoo! group, and guided me over here.  There is an enormous wealth of knowledge and commitment to the Vision in this forum.

So, go ahead and find those Visions, the folks here will be around to help you get and keep them on the road.  The Vision is a surprising motorcycle, and has shocked many of my friends with it's spritely acceleration.  Great cornering too, with the low COG and generally light weight.  Be a very good motorcycle to start someone on, but send your son thru an MSF Beginner Rider Course before he keys any bike of his own.

I originally got my Vision as a bike for a SO at the time...the Vision stuck, the SO, not so much...   ;)

Just as an off the cuff inexperienced new guy shot I'd say the starter needs a new nose seal, maybe a rebuild?  I just ordered a pair from NAPA, they're cheap (shipping's almost as much as the seal so why I ordered a spare to make it more reasonable :P ).

It's a fun bike to ride, and my first bike.  As such I'm a bit more intimidated at times about jumping in to fix what needs to be but from the sounds of it most should be pretty easy relativelyspeaking.  With the list you've got I doubt it'll be a problem at all.  Two more V's on the road would be shiny. :)

Good luck with 'em and velcome.

Ah, such fun to be out riding...

Love the reference, Aelwulf.    ;)

But you shouldn't have ANY trepidation doing anything on your Vision, now that you've found ROV.  Domo?  Whenever you have problem, that you want to solve, have a palaver with the Visionaries.   :)  With nearly 900 of them here in one place, one of them's likely to have seen it before.  It's not brain surgery or rocket science, these Vision.  Albeit they may lookie like either at times...    ;D

BTW, I still wanna know WTFU with Dark Side and Cookies?

Mastergunny, I'm sure your friend is extremly competent but, be sure to ask here on anything he deceides . Most mechanics are not aware of the excentricities and specifics of the Vision. As you can tell , we are.  godd luck!
