Yup, those are your 2 choices, I have a full set for sale, cap, seat & ign switch. but having a locksmith make a new key would be cheaper.

easiest way is to pull the ign switch and bring it to them, and have TWO keys made (tuck the spare into the liner of your helmet) unless you locked the steering head, if you did then you'll have to have them come down and pick the gas cap and make new ones from that.  a new set will run you about $25.

When i picked up a helmet lock it only cost me about 10-15 bucks i think...but im not sure if they just cut it using a code (not sure if those are what the numbers that are printed on the back of it are).. but definately the easiest and cheapest way.. it should only take at most a couple hours...  any local small locksmith would be more than happy to do it.

 8)Easy!
Take down the number on the ignition  and take it to a lock smith. The number should be easy to read right off the top of the ignition where the key is inserted. The first letter tells the lock smith what blank to use and the rest of the numbers are a code for the cuts.Have done this a few times.Otherwise, get the blank and take the ignition apart and use small files to make your own cuts.I've done that to my Venture so I could take the key out after the bike was started to open the trunk, either way works well if you take your time. Good luck.

man ,, skuter dude,,, you just cant win,,,,
?all the work and now a key hiding from you ,,,, your luck runs sort of like mine,,, all good ,, then way bad ,
?but look on bright side,, locksmith can fix you up in less than an hour.
?if you dont have any numbers to work from,, you can always trailer the bike to the shop,,,,, will be a bit more, but most smithies will cut you a break when they see you are about to have a breakdown over all you hard work on a trailer .... (been there ,,, done that? ?will never say!! hmmmmm )

ignore gavin,,, my little nephew was playing on my computer,, now he working in the yard to make up for running his big fingers on my ALIEN . sorry to anyone he may have been a bother to,,,, spending a lot of time asking others to forgive his lack of sense . my sister going to owe me big time for playing keeper of the little animal .
keep your bike running, your beer cold ,and your passport handy.all are like money in the bank .

Doh, After writing this, I realized that the bike already has the starter switch.  Super brain fart.  All you need is the ignition circuit on/off rocker switch.

Whether this post was a landscaper in training or not, I have seen this done on cars, why not the bike? ?My Dad had to do this on a Chevy Vega because of a Bad ingition switch and I did it for a friend on a Datsun as the key was stuck in the ignition. ?It should be able to be done on an '80's bike.

You need two switches, one to open/close the ignition circuit and one to operate the starter. ?The ingition circuit switch should be a rocker type switch that will leave the ignition circuit either opened or closed. ?The Starter switch should be something spring loaded that will open the circuit (cut the power) again once you let go of the switch.

To use the switches, simply flip the switch to turn the ingition on, hit the starter switch and let go when the bike starts. ?To shut the bike off, just flip the ignition switch the other direction.

I would mount one of the switches in an area that was out of sight somewhere. ?As your bike will no longer need a key to start, you don't want some unauthorized person riding away on your beloved vision. ?Once you pull the ingition switch, you should see all the wires that you need. ?The only drawback I foresee is if you lost the ket with the forks locked.

Enjoy,
Chris
