Why did they have to plumb the wires at 6 oclock like that, they look bad. Should have just routed it down the stalk and put some loom on there or something.

I agree with you completely.  And those terminals exposed and so near the mirror are butt ugly.  They should have loomed both mirrors and made the junction connection far away like near the tree of a bike.

But they won't fit the V anyway as they are both RH thread.

With all the telescope stuff I've been looking at lately, those look like they are wired for dew prevention!

You can get adapters for switching the yamaha mirror mounts to both RH thread.  You get two so the mirrors are the same height.

If you have an accident on a motorcycle, it's always your fault. Tough call, but it has to be that way. You're in the right, and dead -on a bike. The principle is not to have any accident. If you're involved in an an accident, it's because you did not anticipate. Then, by default, you failed.

Inane , if you try to tap the threads to right hand, you will end up with  a stripped hole . There's not enough meat to tap it deeper.

I got some adapters from denniskirk.com.  They were around 6.00 for a pair.

Where there is a will, there is a way.  If the mirror housings could be split open without breaking them, then the wiring can be moved and you can cover it and the stalk with some split loom.  Won't be pretty but could be functional.

I was looking at something similar to put the turn signals on the front of my mirrors then put some driving lights on the signal stalks.

Naw, you can tap it the other way. Its a pretty weak connector, but i did do it on my xt250 back in the day for some reason, cant remember why i had to though. I think i used a right handed bolt i cut notches in and ran a die over it to make an impromptu blind hole tap.

Curiously enough thats how i corrected a stripped spark plug hole in a cb650, cut notches in an old spark plug, ran a die over it (actually rebent the threads straight with a chisel) and ran it through the plug hole on TDC, then blew it out with an air hose. Yes i know metal was still in there, but it was an emergency :P

You've discovered an old technique to repair damaged spark plug threads , in the absence of a proper tap.  The trick is to put a lot of axle grease on it in hopes of catching the chips. Probably weren't that many anyway.

The Prophet of Doom

On my old GS the thread stripped out on the bit the mirror screws into.  I just filled the void with 2-part epoxy resin, smeared vasaline on the mirror thread, pushed it in and taped it in place till it set. I could then unscrew the mirror slightly to adjust.  Stayed as good as original till I sold it and bought the xz550
