looking at rear shocks for my xz bobber project.some ducati's have the same style rear suspention as the xz with the shock mounted diagonaly from the swing arm to the frame, where most bikes have a rising rate type rear suspention with the shock compressed through a bell crank system.do you think this would make the shock harder or softer?and how do you think it would behave if fitted on a xz.I have fitted a front end from a fz 600,air forks, twin piston twin discs and a 19" front wheel from a fj650 turbo, its the same pattern as the xz has a 110 tyre on and will give the look i want.

there is a limited choice of shocks that will fit a stock Vision/xz550
that's why you don't see it mentioned here much

sure, a wilburs would be fine, or a hagon... but that's more money than most peeps here are willing to spend.

I can email you an older (2005) pdf I have that lists Works Performance shocks if you'd like.

the nice thing about this pdf is it gives the length of the shock...

so, figure how long a shock you need (shorter would prolly be better for your bobber), look at the chart, and see if there are similar type suspension systems and do some research..

or get youself this Triumph tt600 shock on ebay

and modify it see reply #10 on this page:

I modified a Kawi 636 shock to fit at one point as well, but didn't put in to many miles before putting it back stock.  I finally got an 83 shock for mine, so once I have a "good" setup to compare it to I'll probably do some more tests on the swap.
Rider1>No wonder, the Daytona has very sharp steering and aggressive geometry.  It's a very difficult bike for a new rider.
Rider2>Well it has different geometry now.

I'm keeping an eye open for an old Vison shock to rebuild, i think Dave may have one soon, or if anyone wants to throw a dead one my way.  since most things that have been 'built' can be rebuilt (& upgraded), i'm sure there is a way to redo a stock shock...  with either an oil resevoir, air presure, etc...

hii thanks for the input, have seen your site glyn with the triumph shock and the webber!may try for that one on ebay, but not sure yet if the set up with a bell crank uses different spring loading than the direct type like ours.I am not after race performance but for £20-£30 a modern upgrade seems a good idea.

Lucky, if you can't find one closer , I have  one.

I've been measuring up the Ducati shocks myself and the Ohlins on the Monsters seem to be within a few mm's of fitting, in fact I have one lined up to try, and to own if it works well enough, as soon as it comes off it's current bike........... (where's the emoticon for impatient finger tapping when you need it).

I also measured up a Bimota DB2 and it was the correct measurement but I had a gut feeling it's owner would have noticed if I had swapped it   ;D

Having an option like that would be fantastic if a little expensive.  I had called Öhlins  few years ago and they said they could make a shock for me.  The price... $1800.00!  :o
I have been known to waste money on my bike and car habit but that was way out of my ballpark.  If there is a off the shelf unit that is available it may be reasonably priced.

The Progressive shock I have  is very good...  An Öhlins or a factory Ducati would certainly be better.

When I was looking for a rear shock for my modification I looked for a one that came off a 600/750 since I thought they would have about the right spring rating. Not very scientific. Also wanted one with a flexible hose to the damper adjustment so it could be tucked away. Lastly had to be a very similar length. There's very little room under there. I think all non Vision shocks will need some type of mount adaption to fit. They seem to mod the standard shocks on bikes these days (since there's nothing else to do??). Plenty of choice on E bay. But be quick before all the other Vision owners buy up the T600 shocks!

At least the gas price is coming down, problem is so is the world economy!

Lucky,
I'll send you an 82 shock with low miles if you pay the freight. About 6 K miles.
Let me know if you want it.

I canceled ,dish network a long time ago, too expensive  for us and a poor value to boot. twenty channels  that were worth watching and130 that were a waste.

Lucky,

Supposedly, according to Progressive's website, the 01-1160GT is a replacement for the '82 Vision.  I think both Dennis Kirk & Bike Bandit had 'em for $88-95 or so, but I'd call 'em first to make sure.  It looks mostly like it's just the spring.

Ah, such fun to be out riding...

I also for a while was looking for a shock for my '82 when I had it. A guy who does my tires and has piles of parts including shocks. Let me check what would work. Length and travel are the primary issues. When I found the right length, the travel was too short or too long. Both are not good. Too long being dangerous when your wheel hits the inside of the fender.  The "eye" size is also important.  So, as you guessed...no luck here. Thus, I fitted an '83 Vision shock in 20 minutes.
looks aren't important, if she lets you play by your rules

am not sure , but i think i may have had last running bobber project, even though i grenaded it after failing to recheck final drive oil levels ---- i cut rear seat extension off, upped the frame to 2 inch tubing and added two struts from rear of seat frame box to rear axle -- no shock, no cushions , just the springs in the tractor seat - wasn't a bad ride ,once i changed ride style to include using brakes around rough roads . may she rest in peace ( moment of silence)

If the get high speed down to 19.95  a month , I might be able to do it. But that's not going to happen around here , the only source is Frontier telephone and they have NO bargins.
