Have a nice original muffler with chrome peeling off the back of the cone. Can these be painted black like the 83 or will the chrome not take kindly to paint?   BDC

the cans will accept paint, but there is a price to pay on your part first .  in order to paint on chrome surface, you must find someone willing to blast the surface with aluminum oxide, in order to create a "gripping "surface for the high temp primer.   i did my pipes on several different bikes  by sanding by hand first to "break up "the chrome finish, then sand blasted them used 1000 grit aluminum oxide . then prime with high temp primer (or use a ceramic  base header paint ) . then finish them off with a coat of high temp high gloss header paint .  be sure to cook all layers of paint by actually just riding the bike for 5 or ten miles, allow to cool, then ride again -- this will "cook"the high temp or ceramic paint, allowing each new coat to bond correctly .

second option is just paint with speckled bbq grill paint , then use a few coats of flat black wood stove paint -- and then cook it on .    you will have to redo the work every other month or so, to keep it sweet, but it works .
keep your bike running, your beer cold ,and your passport handy.all are like money in the bank .
