float level

If the float level was too low in one of the carbs what would the result be? Reason I ask is I did the check outlined in the haynes manual and it seems to be a bit low, and wondering how close it has to be to the measurement they specify.

Pretty close, or else you stand the chance of starving a cylinder at higher speeds.
