I just finish a long boat ride from Bellingham, WA to Ketchikan, AK and had some reading time on my hands.
I bought a book that might be of interest to "V" Riders.  It is written by Dave l. Hough the author of "Proficient Motorcycling" & "Street Strategies".

I picked up a copy of  "MORE, Proficient Motorcycleing, Mastering the Ride", 2003 Bow Tie Press.

It is a worthwhile read.  I view the insites as cheap insurance.   Of all the insites, the focus on "riding attitude" stands out as a key item in successful riding.  "Successful  riding" is  not crashing.

His ten best tips are:
1.anticipate what's going to happen
2.never ride under the influence
3. if your going to ride fast, get serious.
4. countersteer
5. get in the habit of using the front brake
6. get some training when you get a new motorcycle
7. wear a helmet
8. get a license
9. stay home on friday night
10. learn to read the road surface

and I would add, ride a safe and properly prepared machine. (mechanically safe)

If you get a chance, get this book it could save your life.

it is on its way to rhpaw. 8)

Yes that is a great read. Dave Hough has a lot of great common sense ideas and a writing style that really keeps you interested.

Rhpaw says he is drying his out.  I did mail it on a rainy day...but... may have been drownd on it's way to the airport from the Post Office, remember we did not get our bridge and the book had to go by ferry. ::)

So, Dave has been inducted into the AMA Hall of Fame.  See this, it carries interesting commentary.

You know, I know several people that thought the book might be about m/c maintenance..but it is about thoughts and philosophy.
I just could not get all the way past the first chapter.  Most likely you are richer for reading the whole thing.   I don't know how it ended.

I dont either.... It was about quality.. quality of repair, quality of ride, and ultimately, quality of life. But had little to do with bike maintenance. There was a good story about a ride intertwined through it, though.

I read that book (Zen...) in college.  I wasn't a motorcyclist then, my father had been for many years.  I knew what I was getting to though (as in I knew the gist of the story).  Mostly I read it as a way of avoiding my homework.  Amazing how things work out, I also learned C programming back then to avoid homework. Now I work as a computer programmer writing scheduling software for 6000+ cpu render farms..

My degrees were in math and physics.... (eventually demoted to math with a minor in physics)  :-)
