twist the throttle 3 or 4 times,
then presss the start button and at the same time "pump" the throttle.

she just wont start any other way, when shes cold atleast
choke doesnt help,

so whats your method????

Lucky: So the hard starting maybe the valves out of adjustment?

mine i put the choke at about half, then hold the throttle about 1/16 of a turn hit the button and wait for it to fire once and then twist a little more. But like i read earlier in this segment "every bike is different" and trust me these bikes are like 16 year old girls. they have a mind of their own and one day their great and the next their a total bitch  :)

Kiwi

Choke all the way, twist the throttle 2 times, then hit the starter button and twist a little more.

There is a sweet spot in there that makes her start right up.

But i only do this when the motor is cold, once it's warmed up ( like if i have been inside a store for a few minutes after riding there ) i just leave it as is and push the starter button.  Maybe a little twist on the throttle to find that sweet spot

fret not

No wonder these things eat starters!  Well, some of them anyway.

all the Visions I have had ...have had slightly diifferent cold start procedures. The main question is HOW long has the bike been sitting since last run. And if it was a hot day last time. Reason being hot engine on a hot day when stopped. The gas evaporates quickly from these bowls. Also the 82's have richer idle jets and from my experience need less twisting of the throttle. But my rule is NEVER twist while cranking unless it's already flooded...this ain't an old 2 stroke.  I have flooed my '83 - 3 times. Each was a result of pumping the throttle before attempting to start. I.E.> it didn't need the gas. My '83 If sitting more than a week it usually requires one or 2 twists before cranking. I have an electric fuel pump. So for everyone else...turn it to "prime". My '82 was a gem. Never needing any twisting. No matter how long it sat. ANd only needing choke when stone cold. These all need choke when cold. Heck...that's what it's there for.  If you have an '82 that needs constant twisting to start along w/choke...your bike has issues.  Maybe minor...but none the less- has issues.
looks aren't important, if she lets you play by your rules

I have to say that in my case,, that is totally possible,, I havent gone all the way through it yet.

I tried lots of the different variations of starting listed above and more until my old girl let me know she was alive. What worked for me won't necessarily work for you it seems, but all I did was-

Full choke
2 full pulls on the throttle
wait 5-7 seconds
hit the starter button
while the starter is rotating i pull the throttle again about a 1/4 pull
Then I hear the dulcet tones of a roaring engine

She's not ready to ride yet but at least I know there's life in her.

Typical,, they all like different foreplay so that we cannot, as a group, come up with one thing that will work every time... Sound familiar to anyone else??????
