The guys on my engineering course built a couple of toy cars as welding practice.
My first time on a plasma cutter - these tools are pure joy for cutting metal - I have to buy one immediately

fret not

Are these individual projects a student is supposed to make for the course, or just having some fun?

All four on the course are adults, and we just took control and did the cars - a lot more interesting that the usual mundane stuff, which is a list of things to gain proficiency in; thin to thick, round to flat etc, plasma cuts etc.

The tutor got a real kick out of it, and they will be incorporating that into the curriculum for next year.

Very cool and useful skills to develop. I like the style of the cars with GP side scoops and "Outlaw" top wings.....  :D
