Howdy folks,

I'm under the creeping suspicion the issues i'm having with my bike may ALSO be related to my valves out of spec.  I am having an impossible time sourcing the valve shim tool, and wonder if anyone has found or cross-referenced a tool made for another bike or if its possible to use a generic valve shim tool i've seen online for other bikes?  Thanks folks.

fret not

I have seen the XZ550 valve shim tool offered on eBay from time to time, but in the $60 and above range.  It is possible to remove the shims by removing the camshafts.
You make careful clearance measurements first, then take stuff apart and swap the necessary shims, then put it back together.  It helps to have a shop manual while doing this process.

I went to the 'trouble' of measuring my clearances and found they were pretty close to spec.
Retired, on the downhill slide. . . . . . . . still feels like going uphill!
