I quick head's up on a petcock that I can confirm works on a 1982. Mine started leaking badly and when I rebuilt it it had a vacuum leak and more gas leaks so I was done with the stock one.  Especially since my bike is 800 miles away from for me in the N. Georgia mountains and my time to fix this stuff is very limited.
This petcock is old school with no vacuum port so it's a on/res/off valve. Vacuum cap will be needed for the manifold fitting.  The fuel barb points toward the rear so some re-snaking of the fuel line may be in order. Since our bikes have a fuel pump forgetting to turn it off probably won't be a big deal.

Best $8.95 I ever spent on a bike.

The Virago petcock flange has the same dimensions as the XZ550 (and most Yamahas of the era).

The advantage this mount has over the original is the lateral strips to seal and isolate the screws rather than the old rubber washers. This change is dependent on the tank. On the XZ the screws are exposed to fuel directly making the sealing washers necessary.

When I found this thread I was looking at a Virago petcock rebuild kit.  https://ebay.us/5cVxwK

I am rebuilding the petcock on my '82 XZ and was thinking I'd like to have the later design seal. With cheap valves available it is less cost to buy a new valve with the seal I want. Then I can machine the original to accept the seal.
