Rear Y-Pipe Copper Rings

I have gotten my Vision running after rebuilding the carbs and cleaning up some electrical things.  It seems nice and strong.

There is an exhaust leak at the Y-pipe copper rings that I need to fix.  I have it apart and the rings don't look too bad, there is only 13K miles on the bike.  My question is: how far on to the Y-pipe is the ring supposed to go?  The end of the pipe is tapered and the ring just sits on the taper and cannot slide on to the straight part of the pipe.  Is that normal?  It seems like it should sit on the straight section so that the Y-pipe can go up a little way into the exhaust stub.

I will spring for new copper rings if needed but it seems that I can fix the leak if the rings slide a bit further on to the pipe.  Am I correct?
