missing plug on rear carb at top--is this correct?

Noticed this the other day:  There is a passage visible at the top of the carb, inside the intake area, that is plugged on the front carb and not plugged on the rear carb.  The passage is connected to the air vent on the front carb (which I have installed upside down in the photo, oops) and on the rear carb it appears to have no function, except that it is connected through to something, as air passes through it easily.  It is possible that the plug came out during cleaning, or may it was never there?

Does anyone have an answer?  Should I plug it or leave it open?

Arrows in photo point to the passage in question, assuming the photo uploads!

Thanks!
How did it come to this?

I looked through my photos of the carbs on my 83 and the one I have of the top of them looks like the rear is NOT plugged and the front IS plugged.

I doubt that one of those brass plugs would come out very easily so I think you are fine.

Thank you Kevin.  That is very helpful and I will check this off my list.
