Brake lights come on when ignition is turned on!

Having finally tracked down a short on the horn of my XZ550, I now find that the brake lights come on when the ignition switch is is turned on. When the brake lever is pulled and brake pedal is pushed. the brake lights become slightly brighter.

Any suggestions as to why and where I might look?

I would start with the ground. The light circuit could be returning through the brake light circuit.

Thanks Walt. I cleaned up the ground under the coils. Same results. When I disconnected the front brake switch, the brake lights went out. The master cylinder had been weeping fluid and got into the brake switch causing it to stay engaged. Problem solved. Cheers.
