I meant to email your reply, but sent it to the wrong person...
(I'm so confused latley...)

Subject: Carb hoses

Those hoses are the bowl vent hoses.  they vent fuel fumes from
the bowl to
the atmosphere.  if this was a car in '82 or '83 they would go
to the
airbox.

The vent hoses are a safety device.  say it's a hot day, and the
hoses were
not there. Vaporization & expantion of fuel in the bowl from
ambient temp &
engine heat would flow out the carb vents and collect around the
engine.  If

an errant spark were to occure when the key was turned or the
bike was
started, those fumes could ignite, ruining your whole day.

This senario is actually pretty unlikley, and who's to say
letting the
vapors dump out under the bike by the exhaust is any better, but
they felt
it was neccasary enough to justify the cost. (if it was .25
cents to design,

buy the hose, and impliment it's automated instalation on the
assembly line,

then that's a quarter million dollars they didn't need to
spend... see?)

excellent question though.

Hi Lucky,

Just had a question about the carb.  I was curious as to where
the hoses go
that connect to backside of the starter plungers (by the choke
slide?)  The
hoses run in back of the motor and past the regulator area and
seem to go
down towards the centerstand, but i cant see where they go.
Just curious I
guess.  Can you give me some more info?  Thanks again.

Thanks for the reply on my question Lucky.  It was really bugging me that I couldnt figuire out what they were for or where they went.  Update:  I had a customer of mine who worked for a tool shop take a shot at getting my sheared off screw extractor out and he did it.  I'm back in business!!! ;D

That reminds of a fellow who brought his 160 Honda in for repair (this was in 1972) it seems that he noticeda couple of bright brass fittings under the carbs, being new at owning a bike , he panicked. He looked for some hose to put back on ( in Calif, is /was  common for the smog rotted overflow hoses to fall off) Well, he found a clear plastic hose so he plugge it on to one carb, examination reveled that there was anouther hose, from the top of the engine, just hanging down ( he told me that" hoses don't just go nowhere, they have to go somewhere") so he plugged it on the bottom of the othe carb. It seems that after  a while it didn't run so good. well , the clear tube was the battery vent tube and the fumes ate up the carb, the other was the engine breather , and the float was partially collapsed in that one. it was nothing money couldn't fix.
